I thought the cap was around $1.9M this year.

I've expected, for a while, that we'll see an announcement in the next offseason of a new American DP rule, allowing each team to have an American DP along side their 1 or 2 other DP's. Thus NY would get the DP slot they used on Reyna back to use on somebody else, and LA could keep Landon without having to trade for a DP slot.

This news makes that even more likely to me, especiallyl if they could trade for another DP slot without trading Landon.

I think they can fairly make a deal among teams that both sides agree with. Something like this:

Houston Dynamo gives up: DP spot
LA Galaxy gives up: some used cleats and a soccer ball

The inverstor/operates of those teams would have to sign off, but I think they'd view it as fair an equitable.

Or just increase the salary cap high enough to let teams sign whoever they want.

Or sign Zidane for $200K then get Adidas to load him up with cash above that amount ( as a sponsor) so technically you're under the salary cap.

I agree that putting three DP players on a single team HAS to be flipping over the rules set out and doing them dry. Salary-wise, I can't figure how they manage this. Then lets consider they find a way to acquire a second DP spot...
Kansas City ought to be able to finance a new stadium for what they should make LA pay for their DP spot.

    Bingo!

On another note, would this deal have to be signed by the MLS transfer deadline (which I think is this weekend...)? Or can they bend that rule too???

It's not a transfer, is it?

Let's make a deal. IF, in a million zillion years, Zidane actually signs with the Galaxy, and we don't give up, say Albright & Cannon (or something of that level), then you have full right to get all a-twitter over this.

But let's get something straight, this is most likely a last-ditch effort to drum up opening night press, maybe forcing an on-the-fence DP target (not Zidane) to consider signing, or something of that nature.

Now, for the record, the Galaxy also has a track record of finding under-valued players and making them MLS stars - Carlos Ruiz being a good example. I'm not sure what player, other than Donovan and Beckham we have just "Blown Money" on in the last 5 years.

Tribal Football is by no means a credible link. The make stuff up all the time.

There is no way the Galaxy would be able to have Beckham and Zidane play together... unless Zidane is willing to play for only $100k. HA!

    1. You know what, I'm sure that AEG and LAG do have an offer out to Zidane. I'd almost be willing to bet money that they do (and I'm not a better). TFKAM and Chicago also had offers out to him and I suspect a bunch of other teams do as well.

    2. Everyone is reading the Lieweke quote to mean that MLS has authorized LAG to make an offer. That's not how I read it. I read it as "AEG" has authorized Lieweke to make an offer on behalf of LAG.

    3. There's no news here folks. LAG has talked to MANY players. AEG has already made several offers to Zidane on behalf of Chicago (I heard the money offers started at $15 million per year and went higher).

    4. All of this ignores the French press quotes of Zidane from only 1-2 weeks ago where he says he is NOT signing with MLS and is NOT going to play with Beckham.

    5. Yeah, there are a gazillion obstacles to Zidane signing with LAG. One of them is that it effectively leaves the team with 3 central mids (since that is where Beckham is being moved to). Lack of a second DP. Lack of trade bait. His FIFA suspension which has yet to be served (so he'd play 2/3rds of the MLS season at best). Salary cap problems. April 15th deadline for adding foreign (ie: players not registered with USSF) talent.

So what do we have here? Lieweke milking some free publicity OR an unreliable source making something up. The "door" has always been "open" to Zidane but that doesn't mean Zizou wants to walk through it OR that he'll go through the door with the conditions it requires.

Also, FWIW, here are a couple of LAG acquisitions that I would argue were less than "value":
--Hong Mueng-Bo, Carlos Hermosillo, Luis Hernandez, Pando Ramirez, and Andreas Herzog.

    This won't happen.

But if it did, it will be done this way:

Galaxy obtain DP spot from Houston (Owned by AEG and will be given up for less then fair value)

Galaxy sign Zidane for this year only (That's was Zidane wants anyway and do what is necessary to fit him legitimately under the cap (his salary is $350k agains the cap as second DP)

Galaxy use Zidane's DP on Donovan next season.

So it will be by the rules but very very distasteful (Step one especially)

Good question. Tim Lieweke is not the Los Angeles Galaxy's President.

Kind of throws the rest of the article in doubt.

That's actually quite funny... one can imagine schizophrenic negotiations over the table when Phil's Houston folks talk to Phil's LAG folks.

When I saw this thread, and who started it, my first guess was that the link would be to La Opinion. Tribal would've been my second guess.

Seriously, do we really need to create another Zidane thread for every cockamamie, groundless, rumor?

    Oh my goodness.

Would that not be a sharp stick in the eye + a kick in the groin to
Red Bull and their Clint Mathis strategy :D

Would be great. Would finally smoke out Arena, and get him to sign a superstar.

Dude, your posts are usually good, but that is WEAK

Beckham has been a right mid all his career, and you now see him as a permanent center half.

As to (the other center midfielder for LA)- who the hell is it, and who really cares. Like you can't accomodate him and Zidane (puh-leeze!)

I think it would be a good move, it might just signal the delineation of rules accross the league. I say let the teams do what they want, the market will regulate. If galaxy wants to overload it's team, eventually it will see diminishing returns to a point that would make it unprofitable.

how could this hurt anyone? i think everyone is underestimating their clubs potential to beat a team with Beckham and Zidane.

No i think that whole staff would get fired for not doin their job

But as for galaxy they can get zidane wi`th out any problem remember this the krafts (owners of the revolution) said that they will never spent that much money on a soccer player (DP spot) so im guessing that LA and NE trade comming soon if zidane wants to come
