Not ball watching, that was Erpen. Bos simply made the wrong decision. It's the difference between an experienced CB and a young one.
That's a myth. Tell that to Estudiantes who just completed one of the most memorable championship comebacks in the history of ANY league. That's the same myth the Brits say about Italians and Spaniards. Just because Liverpool's CL '05 win, and MUFC's comeback win a few year's before. They forget all the other times they've fumbled against easy opponents like Arsenal vs. PSV recently.
On another topic I heven't seen in this thread, the referee, the stadium and the crowd were all impressive last night. For the most part that's been true through this entire edition in CONCACAF Champions League, except maybe the field conditions in Puntarenas, and a couple of questionable calls in that same game. Is this competition finally turning into a real tournament? Fans everywhere seemed to be more pumped up than usual this year, and the quality of soccer has also been impressive. And all 4 DC games were called cleanly by the refs. I hope Soehn goes after the SS this year with everything we got to guarantee us a spot for next year. Putting all your eggs in the playoff basket is risky when all it takes is one PK to knock you out.
Crowd ought to be good tomorrow night as well. I heard that Pachuca wasn't going to charge for entry.
Well, although DC lost, I think that they still showed well throughout the competition, which will help people in the US and Mexico to look at it as a real competition (Houston still making a good impression as well). I haven't been this nervous during a game since the World Cup...so I'm certainly taking the competition seriously. Superliga will also provide a good litmus test for how seriously people take the US-Mex club competitions. It's kinda like we're starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel and we're finally seeing a meaningful international competition emerge for MLS to be able to participate in. I'm pumped about Superliga, and I'm pumped about DC fighting this season for spots in these competitions next year.
Time to start conversations with Kasey Keller. Perkins' lapse in concentration cost us the game. With the defense looking so shaky, we need sure fire brick wall in goal to compensate. This loss, despite being pre-season, will stick with me for awhile. Maybe we need to see Jay Nolly a bit more.
Here...I'll add it for you: Quote: Originally Posted by aj2lagop Time to start conversations with Kasey Keller. Perkins' lapse in concentration cost us the game. First I have to say that I thought Brian had a better game than the last at RFK. What I am afraid of is the thought that this is as good as his game gets. His play is good enough for MLS but not a higher level, thus no Euro contract. And it showed in the Chivas series. I hope he proves me wrong.
Explain to Luciano Emilio why we have to cut him and send him back to Honduras. You seriously think we should use a DP slot on a keeper? Gimme a ********in' break.
If interested, I believe I saw a piece on Soccernet about Keller wanting to finish up over here but not finding a lot of action so far. I didn't read it though, cause the whole thing is summed up in your once sentence above.
I definitely agree. We have not had the chance to beotch about the reffing during this Cup. It took 21 pages to find someone noting this.
Hate to break it to you but this has been a problem since Diego Sonora and Ben Iroha left the team. This is an issue every season. I remember in Olsen's first or second season, he was playing on the wing and I went to a practice. Olsen stayed about 30 minutes after practice practicing crosses and was abysmal, even in practice he would shank them out of bounds behind the goal.
Re: Chivas "letting" DC have possession... There's 'possession' in your own half and just inside the offensive half on the outside, which Chivas was happy to let DC have. But DC moved it into and out of the middle probing for openings as well, and no team would 'let' another team keep the ball there. It's true that the attack generally faltered in the final 1/3 (as it always does unless you're playing a dramatically weaker team), but DC managed to create some great chances even after Chivas went up 3-2 and went into full bunker mode. i.e. people just aren't given United enough credit here.
yep problem is that DCU may slice and dice teams through the middle all year long - and the crossing weakness may not get fixed or may not be apparent. It is a major weakness ..... at this level - it is difficult to train the wingers to become good crossers .... we need to develop the crossing ability with our young players (at the U14 - U18 level) .....
And THIS is why DC should have signed Beckham. He can't do a great deal for us (for the money), but he can send in crosses of very high quality. And he's pretty.
Erpen got toasted on the first goal. After he got burned, Boswell made a mistake and wasn't marking his man closely enough. They both screwed up. Neither are perfect. They're both young defenders.
I don't think he's gotten worse at all ("regressed" was the word you were looking for, btw ), other teams have just figured out a way to play him. Fortunately, I don't think many MLS teams will be capable of executing it. The others, we'll have to figure out a way to gameplan for it.
