You gotta be kidding me.

I knew he'd be back one day, but I thought it would be Alexi bringing him back, not the current regime. He hasn't done anything in 5 years and now he's suddenly going to regain his scoring touch just because Reyna is on the team and Arena is coach? Puhleeeeze.

I made it a point to watch him the fast few years whenever he was on TV since he's a walking timebomb. The team got rid of one incessant referee whiner and replaces him with another (at least he'll be cursing them out in English).

It was pathetic watching him last year when the Rapids came to NJ. He came off the bench with about 20 minutes left. Barely moved and yes, spent the whole time bitching to the refs and even after the final whistle. He looked so out of shape, he'd blend in perfectly with any Sunday morning 40-and-over adult league.

    A ridiculous move.

He wasn't 30 pounds overweight then either.

Wait a minute! I just had an epiphany! How could he have been energetic and thin?

Dude! Sounds like you're the one that put the bi in polar!

Seriously, I'm ambivalent on this. I had a feeling we would pick up another journeyman striker before the season started, but I didn't really picture Mathis.

Hey, maybe coming home will be good for him, maybe it won't. I don't see Bruce keeping him around if he doesn't produce or play hard, so I'm not worried like the ones making the fat and lazy jokes here.

That was a slap in the face.

Hopefully this doesn't cost a lot of $$$, but I think Mathis will fit in well.

Probably no Angel, so hopefully a DP striker signing in the summer, or something.

I now actually have a reason to attend a Red Bull game because Clint is on the team.

I daresay I'm more interested in seeing him play (and play well!) than I am in seeing David Beckham play.

Is this real or am I dreaming???

The most dangerous attacker in the history of US soccer back in the Swamp??! Yabadabadoo! (OK, so Landon came close to seizing that mantle on Sunday, but we're still reviewing the videotape. . .)

OK, so The Man could still crash and burn, but how many of you saw him score 5?? (Who else has done that, by the bye?) How many watched him stick in 2 against the mighty Germans--when the rest of the Yankees were quaking in their boots? Who watched the 60-yard slalom that earned GOTY? And last, but certainly not least, who else was actually in the stands in Korea to witness his sublime trap and clinical finish that silenced 70,000 screaming, pink-clad Koreans and sent the American 300 into supreme rapture??

Watch and learn, ye doubters. Our man has at least one good season left in his prematurely-aging body. The flashes of brilliance we're about to see just may be enough to launch RBNY to the top of the heap!

Where's that number to get those season tickets??

Thank you, Bruce! Thank you, Claudio! Thank you, Dieter!

    Happy Days are Here Again!!!

This is just absurd enough to actually work.

Clint was/is one of the only American players with the stones (and ability) to have a go from distance. He could make for some very entertaining soccer.

This has to be the last chance saloon for him and at this stage of the game he's gotta know it too. With that kinda fire beneath his arse he could make the comeback that even the naysayers among us secretly so desire. At 30 he's hardly a kid but with motivation and dedication and Reyna pushing his buttons who knows?

I'm going to go out on ye olde proverbial limb; I say this is going to pay dividends.

Doesn't that bug you to capitalize each word?

And yes, it wasn't a good move to let Pedro go. He was very good here.

O.k. time for a serious post here. I had to do that one because it's really nice to see him back. But now it's time to come back down to earth and be serious. While I'm happy he's back with the club, I do have some questions about how he might perform.

I don't think we are going to see that 60yd slalom for goal anymore. I think he can set up shots and become dangerous on free kick situations. I'm really looking at him to come off the bench and add to the attack, but an occasional start here & there will happen.

I think his attitude on the field will still be there and play hard, at the same time that reckless attitude we all know he can show I think he has learned to curb it, but then again we shall see.

We have to remember that right now we need someone to fill in for Altidore if he is chosen for the U-20 squad for Canada this summer, at the same time I believe right now Clint will take Altidore under his wing and help him improve on his performence. No Clint won't tell Jozy how to cuss at the ref. But right now untill the JPA rumors become true for the club Clint is a much needed player to improve the substitutions bench and the occasional spot start.

Jeez JPA is at 30 and would be great for RBNY but Clint at 30 is horrible? I guess we should've traded with LA for Cobi Jones then when the club had the chance.

He's gone, get over it. How much longer are we going to get angry about him being gone? If he didn't want to be here, why would we keep him? The thread is about Clint being back, not about sour grapes over JPP's departure . . thats old news, this is new news.

    Thanks, Bruce! :p

I have been waiting for this day!!!!!!! wow this is awesome, seriosly there is something wrong with all of you who are upset by this. he is def. worth taking a shot on, it cost them practicially nothing and he instantly becomes the second best forward on the team, a slot that def. needed to be filled. seriosly hes got talent and thats one thing u cant jus teach to anyone.

and first of all, this whole paragraph really makes no sense and second metros didnt let him go he was sold by the league like every other player. not only that but he sucked, honeslty he was decent wit colorado and then he had a good short stint wit metro. i hate how everyone on this board jus rates players based on their recent production.

The Denver post has an article on the trade that should make everyone feel a bit better:

Mathis will cost us less than $100K

    Here is the article:

    http://www.denverpost.com/headlines/ci_5552793

And here is the key quote:

"Moving Mathis also frees up nearly six figures in salary. Salt Lake agreed to pay a large portion of Mathis' salary when he arrived in Denver, an arrangement that will continue through this season, Clavijo said."

Which means that we can have Clint and still get a DP in the summer transfer window, assuming the $325K cap hit is prorated the way all other salaries are in the league for a player who joins during the season.

If the Angel deal fell through and there was no one else available as a DP right now that we wanted, this deal may have been a no brainer. The choices may have been -

    1. Get no one now and a DP in the summer, or
    2. Get Clint now and a DP in the summer

Would anyone here have chosen number 1?

By the way, according to the article above, Ives is wrong. We didn't trade a partial allocation, we traded a 4th round draft pick for Mathis, with additional conditional picks if he plays well. That doesn't seem like too much at all.

Wow...how this topic went from Cletus to Tubgirl in 8 pages, I have no idea.

    Anyways....

On the surface, this might have originally seemed like a serious "WTF?" move, but the reality of it is that it's another one of those stragetic low-cost additions to the team that moves things around in just that right way to potentially pay serious divedends throughout the season.

If that Denver Post article is correct, we're giving up a 4th round pick (which is less use to us than the previously-rumored partial allocation) and taking less than $100k salary hit for what seems to be a now-highly-motivated Cletus. That by itself is not a bad deal. When you consider that he could add a dangerous spark to the front when we're running a 4-4-2, or act as more of an offensive mid in the 4-5-1, he also adds quite a bit of flexibility to the team and takes some of the pressure off of a developing Jozi. It still doesn't make us the best offensive side in the league, but we are suddenly not so shaky up front anymore. Add to that the benefit others have mentioned of his presence allowing us to move Stammler to the back line, and this move also can significantly shore up our main weakness in the back.

We've also now got the ability to run a fairly offensive-minded 4-4-2 in the case that Reyna needs a rest or is injured.

All of this, and we can still probably sign a second DP in the summer? I'm sold.

Say what you will about Bruce's ego and his failures in Germany last summer...he's definitely shown some balls and a knack for pulling off those little moves that can significantly improve the team beyond their cost (VdB, Reyna, Walrus and now Cletus). We didn't get that one dominant piece like Ronaldo, Zidane or Delgado, but we've got a team that actually fits together, which is much preferable.

IMO, this signing has the potential to put us squarely ahead of NE and Chicago in the east, if it works out nearly as well as it could. With a heavy DP signing up front in the summer (or if Altidore develops into the monster everybody hopes), we could give DC a late-season run for their money for the top spot in the east or perhaps even the Supporter's Shield. (The Cup is naturally already ours since we just have to go on a 4 game tear :p )

Just 8 days remaining until we see how it all works.

Just to help you out on the translation sublicon. He is happy to see Clint back, but he felt his time with both Salt Lake & Colorado, Clint didn't have success like he had with his time here.

Hope that helps. Believe me when "Mathis is a god" is talking, I have to really pay attention when he over types his words.

Nah, I think he was talking about JPP - who was also with Colorado for a couple years before he had his short half-season stint with New York. At least, that's how I read it since the beginning of the post was referring to JPP.

Hopefully, yes. And hopefully Mathis will come cheap. Hopefully he will be able to get in shape. Hopefully he will be able to recover some vestiges of his former self and score some goals. Hopefully he won't impede Jozy's growth. Hopefully he won't be a complete drain on the team and set the franchise back five years (although come to think of it I'm not sure that will make much of a difference. Hmmm).

In all seriousness, I was a big fan of Mathis back in the day. He seemed to have a real killer instinct. And who could forget his performance at the '02 WC? But that was a long time ago. 30 is old for a striker. Especially an out-of-shape one. I really don't see how he can add anything at this point, but maybe that's just me (though probably not judging by many of the postings to this board). I hope I'm proven wrong on this. Maybe I'm underestimating Arena's potential influence. Time will tell.

sorry everyone ... i posted a picture of the Mike Myers character from SNL, in an attempt to bring levity to the thread. apparently the host changed it or something? i never saw this "tubgirl" that people are referring to. very sorry about that, but again i never saw it (and i'm thankful for that?).

sorry, sorry, sorry .. i won't do that again.

back to Cletus scoring 20 goals for RBNY this season.
