These initiatives are so stupid. I mean, they call that a qualifying procedure? And they think those other things are going to turn people into MLS fans? What a bunch of idiots. And what was up with the webcast? That music before people started talking is embarassing. They don't know what they are doing. They think this is a "Major" announcement? They're going to be the laughingstock of the sports world. Holy crap, waht until Jim Rome gets a hold of this stuff. People are going to stop being MLS fans and Chicago is gonna fold. What the hell were they thinking?

Just trying to beat the rush.

i wish the Don would make this small (yet massive) change..

Give the winners of the supporters shield (season champs) a hyped, public, trophy presentation, and make it seem important on TV.

The money bonus is already there (i think?)
The CCC qualifying is already there
    Inexpensive change
    makes the season more important
    players playing harder...

One way to do that would be to have the SS winner and MLS Cup winner (if they're not the same team) play on the ABC game the first day of the season and do the trophy presentation then.

But there are often other issues involved than competitive ones when it comes to selecting the first ABC game of the season (like this year with DSG Park).

Does the NHL, which has an equivalent trophy, do this? If not, why not? I'm thinking the answer is not "because they're dumb".

Back on topic, well, we'll see I guess. Though boo to MLS for announcing an announcement six days in advance. Torture us why don't ya?

Well, in the US, its kind of our tradition to have all the focus on the playoffs in all of the home sports, and thats how its been for many years..

but soccer has a tradition of having the ability to win many trophies, so my thought of making the supporters shield a big trophy (and keeping the MLS cup the same) should just add to the excitement of the 10 year old league

    Don't forget:

People will keep asking what the announcement was, even though the press conference isn't until next week.

People will make ad nauseum references to Geico commercials.

People will build up ridiculously high expectations for the announcement between now and next week and inevitably be disappointed with whatever is announced and then complain that it is somehow MLS' fault.

Garber will be wearing reflective sunglasses.

So, Kenn, I take it by your thinly veiled hints that the Superliga could be a real, home and away, double round robin tournament with more than 8 teams?

I'd like to hear something about additional win bonuses and other monetary incentives to help some of the guys at the lower end of the pay scale, but tied to performance.

Sounds to me it will be financial incentives and qualification info for next years superliga and maybe some other, undisclosed to the great unwashed, competitions.

That would address the concerns of player money and why play the season if almost everyone makes the playoffs.

That makes too much sense, it's gotta be about the Phily Hmong children.

"New Initiatives Monday" is the best idea since "Soccer Saturday".

it's amazing what MLS has time to put together when others are busy creating new ads and promoting the league tv coverage.

Where are you getting that from? I'd love for it to be true, but I don't see how you can get to that conclusion at all from any "thinly veiled hints" from Kenn.

I think one of the new initiatives might be adidas' sponsorship of the ESPN matches. They are now on the advance schedule as "MLS Primetime Thursday presented by Adidas."

Except that it's MLS trophy winner v MLS made-up trophy winner. Not quite the "Super Cup / Community Shield" that many Euro countries have.

That's kind of hard when if you win and tank in the other, you either get lauded or fired, depending on which combination you end up with.

And my bad for blaming MLS for being a tease. It should all go to Kenn. :D EDIT: It's on mlsnet.com now also. So I blame everyone. DAMN YOU ALL!!!

Would that be a "competition initiative" though?
