from Goff's blog: http://blog.washingtonpost.com/soccerinsider/2007/02/answering_machine.html ---- Q: I'm not sure of the details but could you talk about the new women's league and what you are hearing as to what we might see. The doubleheaders with United and Freedom were great. A: Contrary to what the Associated Press wrote, the women's league is not certain to restart in 2008. A group of investors have stepped forward and committed to placing teams in six cities, including Washington, IF a league is launched. It is getting closer to fruition, but at the moment, there is no league. They're still hoping to add two more cities and perhaps launching the league next year. ----
I'm a Philadelphia sports fan. Being disappointed is a natural state. Let me rephrase that. I'm a Philadelphia sports fan who doesn't remember the late 70s and early 80s. Too young. So I hope you're right.
What I find funny is that several of the investors have MLS ties and it was Julie Foudy who back when the WUSA was getting ready to start she was asked if they should play doubleheaders with MLS and she said " e don't want them (MLS) to rife our coat tails" well how ironic that it took MLS investors to bring Pro Soccer back for the women. Lets hope Foudy stays away from this league!
I had fun ragging on Foudy back in the day. Every fan needs a villian player/team to loathe. Heck, the whole league hated my Beatniks.
I'm sure they'll show up sooner or later. Things have already gotten ugly on the main board. Andy, you've been around. Have you ever known Foudy to string more than about 3 sentences together without cracking wise about something. These guys hold to to some joke she made years ago like she made it her personal vendetta to destory the MLS. It's very amusing.
Not to mention, I'm not 100% sure it was actually proven that she said it or in what context or to whom. Maybe it was, but I just remember the general consternation last time around.
I agree. I'm not a huge, huge Foudy fan, however I do think that what she said was made in jest. From what I understand her and Brandi are MLS fans. Get over that guys. Many lessons were learned with WUSA1. Let's start off with a fresh slate.
It never was. "Someone" connected to WUSA said it, and then people said that "sounded" like something Foudy would say and it turned into "Foundy said it." In fact, Foudy had made statements supportive of MLS and the men's NT. We are all on the same side here.
Except in this case there is a grain of truth to the matter. The 91ers had been around long enough to remember when US Soccer treated them like the red headed step child. There were other players that expressed a negative view of linking up with MLS as well. Milbret comes to mind. I don't hold it against them. They had Big Mo working for them after WC 99. If they could go it alone, then more power to them. I don't like Foudy for other reasons...
Either Sachin or Dustin (I forget) has a standing $50 offer to someone offering concrete proof. I don't think it's been collected.
Source, please. Seriously, you'll be a bigsoccer legend if you can find a link for this. EDIT: Apparently, I'm not the only one who jumped on this.
That was last year in a pinch when the league used an interested investor as a signed plan B for the KC mess. The league wants to be in Philly and there are 2 interested investors/bids on this side of the river. I'm surprised you haven't taken more of an interest.
Is there some reason they made the announcement now? It seemed a little premature seeing as the number and names of all the cities hasn't even been determined. I was hoping for a bigger splash.
I think one of these articles said it was to show potential investors that they're serious, and they're hoping that an early announcement will help to get a couple more on board quickly.
Maybe it is an urban legend that came from this article: Not quite the same bite as the legend, is it? There are Foudy coat-tail quotes out there, but they tend to relate to MLS getting a boost from the coat-tails of the World Cup, and the women riding the coat-tails of the Olympics. There is a coat-tail quote in the New York Times, but I'm not registered so couldn't get to it. And from listening to what Julie said last night on NPR, she's clearly learned them and put them to use advising the new league. 'Course, I've always been a huge fan, so I may have been listening with biased ears.
Foudy has also admitted that they were wrong to not seek help from MLS. 20/20 hindsight for sure, but at least she is intelligent enough, and able to put the greater good of the sport over her own ego, to admitt the founders could have done better.
