3-Man team? Yes. Monday Night Football has done it for decades. Dave O'Brien? No. Decent fellow, but shouldn't be stuck with what he doesn't know. Overhead camera? Yes. It works, and quite well. Jack Edwards? Yes. He wasn't the problem. At least he knows the game. ESPN should have a screen name on BS. After years of deserving red, I'd give 'em green on the merit of last night's telecast.
My question is, did they still have the bottom score line the entire match? I watched Univision because I've gotten used to their full screen and showing the anthems, etc.
Ya, Arena makes some pretty obvious statements. After Denmark scored their one goal, Wynalda asked Bruce for his analysis of the goal during a replay, and as the replay is run in slow motion, all Bruce says is something like "it's a cross..........and a goal....." LMAO
To settle the HD talk. Yes they can air HD on both ESPN/2 HD and simply doing that doesn't cost anything extra. The problem was not only what was also on yesterday but the day before and tonight. It's rivalry week in the NCAA and the distribution of available HD production trucks, which are not yet in abundance, was the problem. NCAA college week takes priority.
I echo your thoughts on Wynalda. And apparently he thinks he should still be on the team. Found this little gem from Ive's blog: http://njmg.typepad.com/sbi/ Yo, Eric...shut up, dude. It's over. They're not gonna ask you to lace them up again.
REP to Wynalda!! that is awesome. i wish everyone we had played with his fire ......... (granted it was counterproductive at times, but at least he cared). Waldo Rulezzzzzz
I like the fact that Wynalda gets upset whenever our play is mediocre or disappointing. Seriously, its refreshing that someone in the media actually cares!
espn spent plenty of money on that show skycam alone is very expensive it is very important that we tell espn how much we appreciated the longer time slot and how cool the show looked it will go along way toward them putting more resources toward soccer tv in the future
During the game, the only really negative comments Wynalda made were directed at Rolfe. Most of them were overly harsh and completley unnecessary. Arena actually stepped in once and defended Rolfe. Since his mancrush is not exactly a secret, it is logical to assume that Wynalda was upset that Twinkleman was on the bench and that Rolfe started. It becomes even more obvious why Wynalda, the former super-stud forward, was upset when he makes comments like "I could do better myself." It is sad that many people who were watching the game totally bought into the idea that Rolfe was "horrible." Besides being set up for failure by either Bradley (why play longball without the appropriate targets?) or the defense (why hoof the ball upfield instead of playing it on the ground when we are not playing with targets?), Wynalda threw Rolfe under the bus, in a very bad way. In the words of BA: "clathleth."
I don't think Rolfe's chances are over, but he did next to nothing during the game. I don't particularly remember the negative comments that Wynalda made. Maybe they were too harsh, but they weren't unfounded.
^ I liked the skycam, but in moderation. Some of the views and angles were really cool. One thing I noticed is they have to make sure that when they cut to another camera that that shot doesn't have the skycam in view. There were a couple of times that i noticed the skycam moving out of view and it was a bit distracting (actually I thought it was a player at first; ha!) The producer or whoever will need to get used to the feel and flow of a soccer match, so it may take a few matches to get the timing down.
i wasnt sure it was going to work but really liked it for replays less enamored with it for live action but an impressive move by espn to try new things
I felt like the skycam put you right on the field... whatever they paid for it, I think it was worth it.
wynalda has a certain quotient of open mouth disease.. don't forget his passion for twellman, so he'll focus his criticism on anyhting to get twellman onto the pitch... the bottom line thing, i've learned to ignore it some what... switched over the 52MX for after match coverage LIVE for the mexico city studios..... really good analysis, not the puff stuff you get most of the time...
wynalda is how old?? christ, grow up....no wonder the czechs got you that red card back in 1990... he whines like a 13 year old girl half the time.... sure, espn likes that style approach....but give me some content... that's why arena sounds so good, for every stupid waldo whine, arena actually makes a decent point...
I agree. Wynalda can sound bitter sometimes. Thought the overall quality of the broadcast was good. Skycam's fine when used in right places, such as Donovan's goal. Camera work's much better. But there were too many shots of the crowds. It broke the flow of the game. Besides, I'd much prefer seeing the players' reaction after a goal instead of fans jumping up and down. Thought O'Brien did O.K. Arena and Wynalda worked nicely together. I liked how they offer different opinions from time to time. Arena thinks the midfielders should send in more crosses so that the frontline could have more support. Wynalda counters that the forwards aren't making runs and providing outlets for the midfield. Arena's voice kind of fades into the background sometimes. Maybe it's just my hearing, though.
yeah, i have to agree sometimes he just sort of fades away he needs a little more energy in his voice crowd shots are part of sports tv these days i didnt find them too bad i have seen much worse with nfl and mlb when ut us just annoying
