i know that they have said it before, but what gets me is that it is now in writing...

Also... if America advances past Sporting and also past the group stages....i have a feeling that they will set up the knock out stages where 2 mexican teams eliminate each other in either the 2nd round and either in the quarters or semis...

in other words....they are altering groups to ensure that none of the 3 teams go far in the competition

altering groups will be more stealth than altering quaterfinal brackets. Altering QF brackets is just retarded.

edit, i think the article said Semifinal bracket modification.

Yup it's in the semi's that they would have to face off against each other. Look at it this way at least it guarantees one Mexican team in the final.

theoretically, 3 Mexican clubs can advance past the group stages.

Are they going to alter the brackets in a manner to ensure those 3 Mexican clubs are not all semifinalist?

I would assume they are not going to allow a scenareo like this

    America vs Toluca

    Necaxa vs Boca Jrs.

    would they?

welcome to Conmebol... Priority #1 & #2 are giving to Brazilians + Argentinos....Hence why they also get 5-6 participants from the get go!

Exactly the opinion expressed by Cruz Azul's directivos. Or maybe it was their excuse for the crappy showing at the interliga

Why change the rules? they could still have the final down in South America even with Mexican Teams as finalist. Just choose a neutral stadium. The first leg could be played at the stadium of the team that reached the finals with the best record, gol difference or whatever.

maybe pull out from the Libertadores? gone are the days where it was good experience for the MFL teams to participate...the only teams worth playing are the argentines and brasilian

and is not like the libertadores it's working as a good place to export players either..

maybe im wrong but hey, why being in a tournament you are not allowed to win fairly? our teams are the one bringing the cash, they are not the ones doing us a favor for participating anymore

Maybe they should threaten conmebol that they will not play in this tournament until this rule is fixed.

Si iban a decretar tal reglamento, a mi me parece justo que no aceptaran a dos equipos de NINGUN pais singular, no nomas a los "invitados". Parece que el anfitrion no quiere que el huesped coma del pastel.

you know, that's the first thing i thought of when i read the article.

i'm assuming if all three advance, two mexican teams will play in the round of 16 or quaters, and if two more advance, they'll meet in the semi's.

BTW, you guys forget that Conmebol had this statute in place until the late 80s, 90s. No team from the same country could play in the finals. I can't remember when the statute was lifted. Regardless, I disagree with COnmebol in this one. If 2 teams from the same country are in the finals , it's because they deserve to be there.

    Wouldn't want to do that.

CONMEBOL would win in that situation.

Then they'd hand at least 1 spot to an MLS team.

I agree we can fix this by just pulling out, in fact all three teams that are in the copilla should pull out, we don't really need to play in those tournaments anymore, we are better and they are ,and they are letting us know that by making those stupid rules......

    Asi es........

It was in place, but I don't think it had ever happened before. America and Morelia were made to play each other in 2002 because of that rule. The very next year they lift the rule and 2 brazilian teams play the final.

I agree, this is bullshit  Pull out and let them go bankrupt again. Its no longer a win-win situation for Conmebol like it used to be.

but the difference between the previous statute and this current one is that the statute singles out Mexico. The previous one did not single out any country.

I hate Luis Fernando Tena. It´s no wonder CONMEBOL does what they do if we have such "great" representatives that basically drop their pants to them.

PS If any of the America players get cracked because stupid tena wants to have their starting lineup and go for the win with a 5-0 lead, he should be stoned when he comes back from Peru.
