Odd to see a soccer story not involving mass violence on drudge's page, but I guess every major outlet has picked up it now... http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=399465&cc=5901 "After discussing several options with my family and my advisors to either stay here in Madrid or join other major British and European teams I have decided to join LA Galaxy and play in the MLS from August this year." I'm not quite as jazzed over this as some, but I'll definitely be marking my calendar....once we get a schedule, that is.
I saw a picture of Landycakes drinking water. The caption read who is a greater [picture of cat]. Whoever has it, plse. post.
You can see it now... all the hair salons in the greater LA area will be booked solid with this pair of douche bags.
I will at least admit to being surprised at the prominence media outlets are putting on this story. It's not just a blurb on the sites...it's bumping otherwise respectable national stories for first spot. That's pretty impressive.
Now the only question remains is if he brings credibility and fill the seats. I'll buy tickets to Beckham's first trip to PHP. LA Galaxy better win it all. But I doubt it.
This is such a huge deal for MLS. Beckham will bring people out. LA is going to sell out every game. MLS just pushed the President off of the front page on CNN.com. That is incredible. I am not a huge fan of Becham, but he is entertaining to watch. And I have already had 3 people at my work come ask if I can get tickets for when LA plays FCD, and they also asked who FCD plans to get with their exception. This is huge.
As much as I hate to think it, Beckham if he stays healthy will be devastating for the Gals. For all his deficiencies he comes across as a guy with a lot of personal pride so I doubt he'll treat MLS as a vacation or semi-retirement. And as we saw with some of the big names in the early years, as opposed to Matthaeus, when they care they can transform a team. Add in Beckham's longish/directish passing style and I think he'll fit perfectly in the league. We have had enough problems with Donovan splitting our defensive line, imagine how it'll be when Beckham is sending the balls through. Therefore I suggest Serioux sending LD to the hospital during the opener.
Note from the MLS telecon: LAG haven't even had a press conference about the signing, but so far this morning they have signed up 1K season tickets. Hopefully FCD is paying attention.
Good god Gordon, you have some pent up anger. There are plenty of other targets to direct your hostility to.
Hitch on his blog writes that they are looking for their own Rock Star. But he could be meaning a Def Lepard reunion concert at PHP this summer.
a guy being interviewd on the radio compared the "Beckham to MLS" move with the "Howard Stern to Sirius Satellite Radio" move. they are saying his salary is 50 million per year --- ? --- doesn't that number include estimates of possible ancillary income --- like --- royalties on his image on Gals merchandise. otherwise Anschutz is paying Becks $49,600,000 per year, right?
Just under $10 million per year in actual salary, the balance is image rights revenue that he had been sharing with Real Madrid and other sponsorships. I think MLS just wanted to throw out the big number of $250 million to make everyone gasp at the biggness of the deal. But Anschultz ain't cutting him a check near that amount.
That was Bob Sturm on the Ticket. I was surprised about a bit of the negativity. LA just paid up to 250 milliion a year, depending on how much stuff sells. In return, they have already gotten: - 1K season tickets in half a day. - An ad placed on the front page of every single newspaper in the world. - They were down to chosing their front-of-the-jersey sponsor between two companies. Think that is getting racheted up a notch? MLS and LAG have made a very wise investment. I would suggest that the media impact of this has far surpassed their highest expectations. And when NY makes a huge signing to counter, the entire soccer world will be buzzing...
And the Galaxy is only really paying him about $5-9M a year, the rest is all endorsement related. So its well worth it, imo.
