I spent many a childhood night under the covers listening to Karvellas call Bullets games on a little radio pressed to my ear so my parents wouldn't hear me. When I learned he was into soccer, too, it made me appreciate him even more. He was also a local sports anchor for awhile in DC and you can bet he gave the Dips good coverage. A lot of kids my age in DC saw their first soccer highlites on TV because Karvellas showed them on Channel 5. RIP, good sir.
I can still hear his voice: "You're watching Cosmos Soccer"....as he led to the commercial break. He had a special way of calling a game and pronouncing the players names. Great voice. R
