I just found this place I thought it was sweet that there are this many people connected to Portugal. I wanna know how. Parents came, you are Portuguese, fan of Portugal or other. Me, I lived there for 2 years, learned the language and came back this summer.
My great grandparents and my avôs are Portuguese...all of them from the beautiful cidade do Porto... Irony is that i haven't been in Portugal yet...maybe next year.
100% portuguere born and raised. I was born in Mirandela, Tras-os-montes, came to Toronto when I was 6 but parents still maintain a hard core portuguese lifestyle
Half Portuguese on my mom's side. I learned most of my Portuguese as a kid, when my Grandpa took care of me. I became a Benfica fan in that time as well I have since resumed learning Portuguese, and hope to one day become completely fluent. I also have an internship set up for a company in Lisbon next Winter, and a semester abroad in Coimbra in the summer, so I will spend some significant time there. And hopefully I can meet a Portuguese honey, so when I get married I can become a citizen
while you're there and if you want to watch some good soccer, take a drive out to Porto and visit the Dragao Stadium... you'd soon become a Porto fan!
Well....My folks are 100% Portuguese but came to Toronto in the mid-60's. As for me, I'm Luso-Canadian... born and raised in Toronto, a mixture of a Portuguese upbringing with a Canadian mindset. I love the motherland (that would be Portugal), but Canada is my ultimate home. I still have loads of family in Portugal (grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends) and I visit regularly, like just last week. I'm also able to speak, read and write the language, but I'm currently taking lessons to spruce myself up...thats me in a nutshell (chestnut shell to be exact!)
I've lived in Odivelas, Povoa de St. Iria, Lagos, Vale de Amoreira, Olhao and Ponta Delgada (S. Miguel). Anyone from any of those cities or been there?
Those are my plans for the future as well...there wouldn't be nothing better than having a portuguese mom for your crianças...
Parents from Lisboa(Olaias) and connections in Monte Gordo. Go back usually every year... Me I was born and raised in Montreal though.
That's great, it takes a lot of effort, but it the long run it will payoff. Both my kids have finished Portuguese school, and can also read, and write. They spend all summer in Algarve (Alvor), I unfortunately can only go for a few weeks, but it's how I recharge my fuel cells.
My folks are Açoriano - my mom from São Miguel, and my dad from Terceira. They both immigrated to Canada in the early 70's. My brother and I were born and raised in Toronto. I have never been to Portugal at all. The closest I ever came was sitting at a travel agency in early May 2005, just a couple of weeks before the UEFA Cup final was set for Alvalade I plan on going one day... I can read and speak Portuguese extremely well, and for that I thank my parents, RTPi, A Bola, O Jogo, and Record throughout the years in helping me! I am sure that I can write Portuguese, but haven't done so in quite some time. I hope that my two boys can also learn to read, write and speak Portuguese, if only to continue to preserve their cultural background. BTW - thread moved to NSR...
thanks...It's definitely not easy considering English is the dominant language spoken at home and the fact that I received very little formal training in either reading, writing or speaking... I basically went to the school of hard knocks! Anyway, I have recently started attending night school at first portuguese in Toronto to spruce up my skills. It will definitely pay off. Over the years I've had my family help me along with CFMT and the brazilian novelas, as well as RTPi and local portuguese papers. One thing I am very proud of (If I can toot my own horn) is that people have commended me on my accent (or lack there of) and my pronounciation!
Well Im Born here in Canada. My dad is born in Portugal (Tras Os Montes) and came in the 70's. My Mom is born in Canada, but her parents immigrated from Madeira. her father (my avo) Was the first one to come he came to Canada on 1953 on a boat. Ive never even been to Portugal, and My Portuguese is terrible. Im gonna go soon though hopefully.
Yeah, earlier I posted where I've lived in Portugal, favorites being Ponta Delgada in the Acores and Lagos in the Algarve. I was there for 2 years as a missionary and learned the language. Other than that I have no connection to Portugal, but I feel like a part of it living among the people so intimately for those years. Unique place.
parents are both from sao miguel i was born and raised in canada, go there to portugal alot. i know how to speak and read, speaking is thanks to my parents and reading well without RTPi i wouldnt have known how to read... not a great great reader but i can read and understand almost anything. sometimes wheni read i sound like a moron for some words i have to pause and say it slowly only for longer ones and ones ive never heard of before.
Lagos is such a beautiful town on the coast of rocks, great petiscos, and a even better night life. The Germans have benn keen to it now. Alvor is a smaller town with more tourists from Great Britain, I love them both, while I'm there I go more to Alvor, and Portimao because its closer, but once a week I gotta go to Lagos.
I would not go play for Portugal over Canada if that is what your are asking. I am what I am, what I have learned from Portugal is every time I go back to the country, my family, and futebol. P.S: You are as Portuguese as me buddy.
