After that Dateline special in south Texas, you don't really want another "one of those people" in the State of Texas, do you?
That's the question, and all any of us can do is tell you who should not be coach. I don't think that Morrow should be the guy. 2 rookie head coaches in a row have failed. CC finally became an experienced head, but the growing pains about killed the franchise. Let's get the first knock out of the way. Despite what he says, he still doesn't separate himself enough from CC. The fans wouldn't buy it either. To appoint a guy with even less credentials than the one fired would make it a joke. But, over the years jokes have become company policy so we wait and see. Second knock, is that we again are going Euro. I think that those who truly felt that Euro was the way to go have had their run. Their ideas came and left and we were left with soccer that failed to entertain and soccer that failed to give us a cup. Why would we not at least go in a different vein? At least Pareja brings a different tactical heritage. Of the two, I would greatly prefer Oscar. But, I don't think that Oscar is ready/fully interested in all of the aspects that head coach in MLS entails. Without a veteran partner, (eg. Dir), I don't see that as being a good decision. If we are going to keep job descriptions intact, then the only guy, (other than stealing a currently employed head coach), is Steve Sampson and to a much lesser degree Thomas Rongen. Dave Dir would be another name, but that seems very unlikely to happen. I would love to see a combination of previous professional head coaching experience and international tactical experience. I would greatly prefer that we try something outside of the British Isles. A warm weather latitude coach with a different tactical approach. At the same time, a coaching candidate MUST have experience with American soccer. I don't know much about this guy, but he has an intesting resume: Chiquinho de Assis He has extensive international experience, he has professional head coaching experience in the US, he has experience in working with today's prima donna internationals, he is supposed to have a golden eye for talent. He is currrently employed by the A-League Miami team. I do not personally know much about Chiquinho, but this is the type of resume that I would most like to see.
Sometimes, when expressing an opinion, you back yourself into a corner. the only way to escape is to back something you may not like. If you are concerned about global warming, you must support nuclear power. You have no choice. If you want Oscar to stay with FCD and, someday, get a shot at coaching, you must support Steve Morrow. You have no choice. That is the coaching succession. If Morrow fails, then Oscar will take over. By that point, he will have enough expereince. If Morrow turns out to be the guy to geth the Hoops lifting cups with the same monotonous regularity that another team in hoops does, then El Gneralito would take over when Morrow leaves for greener pastures. Any other choice, and Oscar takes his chances this year, and is gone the next. It had nothing to do with his abilities, it has to do with the new managment. The next guy will want his own people there. I found it interesting that Simo is helping Morrow with the practices. Simo may not be the palyer he was in his first year with FCD, but the players respect him and he is a good guy in the locker room. I think Simo would move into a coaching role. That would be an exaple of bringing in your own guys. With Morrow, there is no learning curve. He knows the players, knows what works, and has clearly seen what does not work. Someon new has to figure out the team, and will spend the season learning what system he wants to use and which palyers will fit that system. This is important, because, regardless of what you think about CC, the next guy will inherit a team ready to win it all. A fast start never hurts. Morrow would be an excellent choice. As we are just throwing out names, though, I will throw out MON, and make mine a triple. Dead but dreaming, Scipio Diabolus, vox fatum. Contra. Northside, where is my beer and my DVD?
I'm not as particularly into loyalty as I am into cementing pro soccer in the DFW area via a championship. I love what Oscar brings to the team. But, I think that the old ways had their chance and failed. SM may be a wonderful guy, but it is time for a change. Not window dressing, not "rebranding". We need better soccer in the metroplex. You make good points, but I believe that the backlash on a PR level will be nuclear compared to the infinitely stupid decision to hire CC and GE that horrible day years ago. Damned the torpedoes. You cannot win with fear in your heart. I am sure that Hitchcock will find the right guy. I am also sure that the guy that will lead does not have a British Isles influence to his tactics. Hopefully, Oscar finds a way to stick. But, I am cruel enough to have him sacrificed for the greater good. And, if he is lacking the testosterone to demanding the job and sawing the floor out from under Morrow, then he may not have the tools needed to succed as a coach anyway.
I don't buy that constraint. If you hire somebody besides Morrow and they want their own staff, then you put Pareja in charge of one of the youth teams to work onhis skills for eventual succession. It's not the same as managing a professional side, but he'd still be working on useful skills such as man management and in-game tactical adjustments. And if the new hire plants himself in the job for 10 years then who'll be complaining.
I wasn't a follower of FCD/Burn during Dir's tenure. So, can someone explain to me why would 'we' want him a second time? and, If he was a good coach, why was he fired/let go/resigned the first time?
