Not so... who is playing this Sunday? Sure some times, which when and wear is at question... However, on Thanksgiving Thursday... every local high school is playing their big turkey day rivalry game... then you go home eat one... and put on the Detroit game, then the Cowboys game... Enter NFL Network into the mix, and they're gonna be taking over Thursdays too...
It's not just asking them to travel... but expecting them on such short notice to be able to book anything... and then afford it...
How about just having the MLS Cup take place on New Years Eve, There could be National coverage from NY Times Square, Las Vegas Strip and Hollywood on how everyone is counting down to the new MLS Cup Champion! (LOL)!!! Check out the preview!
Well, I think the idea of having a consistent "date" when the MLS Cup final will be in order to increase the stature of the game has gained some approval, but there is disagreement over which date would be best. Clearly we need to keep something around November or else it becomes a larger conversation, about moving the entire regular season etc. I still think having the final on Thanksgiving has numerous logical and sensible reasons behind it. Memo to MLS - please consider.
Maybe play it on Thanksgiving Eve, but not Thanksgiving. You might get a total of 5 people watching it if it was on Thanksgiving.
Don't thing Thanksgiving Eve would work- one of the busiest travel days of the year.. If people are traveling, they prob. aren't near a TV. Also think about the fans just trying to get to the game itself- travel will be expensive, unless you are flying on Thanksgiving day itself, which is normally a quiet day. I do like the idea of the game on Thanksgiving day.. I think the NFL games are fairly early, so go with an evening game. Why not experiment for one year and see what happens. Next year would be good- shorter season with 2 less games, no WC or WCQ.. I just worry about traveling fans with the busy and expensive plan travel since the cup is still Super Bowl style and fans come from everywhere, not just the participating teams fans..
Boxing Day, make the eurosnobs even happier. Pointy-ball football is an American tradition on Thanksgiving. Trying to challenge it will leave fans unable to go due to family obligations, pissed off relatives because they want to watch the Lions and/or Cowboys play, and poor ratings since those who aren't watching the other games are either watching A Chistmas Story marathon or spending time with their family.
Starting this Thanksgiving, the NFL is playing a 3rd night game on Thanksgiving Day, broadcast on the NFL Network.
Be serious, there's no way in hell the MLS Cup Finale be on Veterans Day, unless it lands on a Sunday and no Thanksgiving Thursday MLS Cup final, because it is a Thursday and the MLS Cup is always played on Sunday. Let's have the MLS Cup to air on a Sunday night, at 20.00/8.00pm ET (17.00/5.00pm PT), like the European networks such as Sky Sports, Setanta Sports, and BBC Sport
Really bad/retarted idea. 1. Going head to head with NFL is a baaaaad idea 2. Noone will go to the game. Its thanksgiving. 3. Going head to head with NFL is a baaaaaaaaaaaaaad idea.
We already go head to head against the NFL with the MLS Cup. Check out http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/writers/justin_doom/11/21/dooms.day/index.html Just ask yourself after your thanksgiving meal if you would like to lay on the couch with your family and watch some soccer...
Ask yourself how many people are going to skip their Thanksgiving meal to travel to wherever the MLS Cup is.
Thanksgiving or not, the final should be held in Las Vegas every year. I know I'd try to make that a tradition.
Here's a few other suggestions for the future games. We need blimps! With the cups selling out in the new Soccer & Entertainment Venues, showing a packed house from above would be a good idea (plus it might make PHP look a little bigger than it does vertically ) Also an offsides line (similar to the first down line in the NFL) for the replays. Wynalda's finger dragging just isn't that accurate.
The solution to the MLS Cup dilemma is really simple. Don't go head to head against the NFL anytime on any network period. You go head to head against the NFL you deserve what you get. This goes for other sports as well. Look if the World Cup went up against the NFL the ratings would be far from impressive.
You're right, Texas soundly beats those freakin Aggies year in and year out Personally, I'm not sold on this T-Day tie in. I don't think it'd end up any better than the current date, for a variety of reasons that have been posted already.
