Er... are you sure you were in DC proper, and not just toodling around the monuments with the other tourists?
googled it and this is what i got "1. chocolate city Washington DC, possibly the blackest city in America. Often called the Chocolate city with its vanilla suburbs. " " One of DC's nicknames is "Chocolate City" in reference to its being a majority-African-American city. During the '50s and '60s, a lotta working-class white families fled DC for the suburbs, leaving a few neighborhoods in Northwest predominately white (and mostly upper-income), the rest of the city predominately black and low- to moderate income. I first remember having heard the nickname "Chocolate City" back in the '70s, when I was in elementary school, but the nickname may have been around before that. I get the impression that the "Chocolate City" nickname is not well-known outside of the DC area, where people tend to think that "Nobody who lives in Washington, DC is actually FROM there," that Washington, DC is filled with bureaucrats and lobbyists," etc. and this Strange but True Washington DC falls directly under Congress' legislative jurisdiction, which has historically been unkind to the black-majority city, perhaps explaining the pockets of poverty and crime that plague the south-east. DC's status as a national capital outside state jurisdiction made it a magnet for escapee slaves before the civil war, leading to its nickname, ‘Chocolate City'. The Chocolate Box
I know I have seen "La Bombonera" translated to "The Chocolate Box", mostly in English publications. But I do not think it is a very good translation. I have never had any thoughts of chocolate when watching a Boca Juniors' home game, although I have had thoughts of many other edible delights. I think using the name you suggested would be offensive to a lot of people in the Washington DC metropolitan area.
its called la bombonera because of the shape and layout of the stadium. So i guess giving the nations capitol that nickname isnt at all offensive, are there any complaints?
I have to say, I have never heard DC referred to as the "chocolate city." It brings to mind a somewhat bigotted joke I once heard about DC, but I won't repeat that here. Am I wrong in thinking that there are no appropriate reasons for DC to be referred to as the "chocolate city?"

How long have you been around DC? I've been in NoVA for thirteen years, and I've heard it referred to as Chocolate City constantly throughout the course of that time. Although, if you live in Fred-Vegas, I can see why you haven't heard of it, as I can't see why it would ever come up in conversation down there... unless you listen to WKYS or WPGC... you probably wouldn't have heard it from any other forms of media, though Eliott on DC101 has called it that on occassion.
Though this essay from the WPost is a little dated, it give a good background on DC as C.C. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/local/longterm/library/dc/dc6898/funk.htm K
Ray Nagin got into a bit of hot water when he said he wanted to rebuld NOLA as a "chocolate city." I imagine referring to DC as such would be massively politically incorrect.
Not really... Chocolate City as used here was/is a term of pride, and to an extent was picked up as such by many local people.
Time to go back on topic... According to another thread and the new title, the Transfer has passed. Is there a link to verify?

I live in Adams Morgan - which is the neighborhood right next to Columbia Heights, so I am very familiar with the area you speak of. I have no clue what you were seeing, but this is an insanely diverse part of the city.
I don't know what you mean by an "appropriate reason". But DC has been referred to as CC for quite a long time. Thanks to the folks coming through for me and posting re: P-Funk while I couldn't get on.
So, given the vanilla suburbs, that makes us the anti-Oreo...'cept the suburbs are getting a fudge ripple hue to them, as is chocolate city itself
Thats my point....if someone where to say DC is a "Caramel-Vanilla Choco-mocha Latte City" that would make much more sense to me.
This was 1975. As Dave Chapelle says "DC has changed since I lived here. . . lotta white people in DC now. Used to be they just sat in Virginia looking at DC through their binoculars." Besides. "Mocha choca latta yaya" was already taken, that is New Orleans. Creole Lady Marmalaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaade!
Uh, you do realize that chocolate comes in many different varieties, yes? Dark, milk, white... it's all chocolate.
What's goin' on? I heard it through the grapevine that the new stadium will be named: "Marvin's Garden"
