I listened to asheville audio stream. Fulltime score 7-0 Bulldog announcers were getting annoyed that Anson didn't call off the dogs the last 10 mins.
If you can't take the heat ... This isn't rec ball, its the NCAA tournament. If you can't take it, stay home.
what a fun game to watch. great attacks and ball movement from the heels. yael had a hat trick and libby, jaime, ali and katie had the others. katie's goal was just nasty, sliding to her right and putting it past a diving keeper to the left. the reserves played very well, too. caroline put one in off a rebound but they called her offsides. we all thought perkins scored the 6th one, but it turned out to be jaime. ashlyn got in the game, i'm pretty excited that i get to tell my grandkids that i saw ashlyn harris's first career save. overall a great game, and the starters should have plenty of rest for sunday. oh yeah, and i feel like it'd be more disrespectful and patronizing to just pass it around in the back. we came at them like we would any other team for 90 minutes. tha'ts respectful
A fun game! I agree that it is disrespectful (and boring) to back off when the score gets lopsided. This game stayed interesting even after there was no doubt as to the outcome.
Re: Anson Dorrance radio interview -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cornbread, I like UNC. As a matter of fact I try to make a trip once a year to see a UNC game on my way for some golf at Myrtle Beach in the fall. But come on, wins and losses aren't always a great measure, especially in a sport that just started booming in the last decade or so, women's soccer. UNC did great when few colleges had respectable women's teams. Now that Dorrance isn't getting ALL the recruits and there is more parrallel, he's no better than let's say, Smith or Waldrum. A post from a different thread, I thought was silly, and after the games today it's stupid. Has Anson ever lost a 1st rd game?
that question may be rhetorical, but because i like to say it i'll repeat the stats: the heels have lost once in the third round, once in the fourth round, and the rest of the time in the final four or finals; if they lose at all
Heels were coasting against a team that was quite thrilled and justifiably so, to be in cashing in a ticket to the big show. I think Perkins scored a goal, and that is what they first announced and then changed it, but my sources which are pretty good, say that upon further review, they goal was awarded to Senior Jennifer Perkins. Major cool. Bring on the the next match. There is no substitute for seeing people walk up to your daughter and ask for a autograph like she is a rock star, trust me.
Glad she got playing time. She was also the starter for the U-19 team in '02 that won in Canada, going into her junior HS year and already committed to UNC. Supposedly she wanted to leave HS early, which if she was able to, she would be a senior now assuming she did not have the injuries. She is a wonderful young woman to know and we are glad that she and HAO were finally able to be on the same field together again. Read her post game comments at http://tarheelblue.cstv.com/sports/w-soccer/recaps/111006aaa.html
you are right..i saw many wanting autographs tonight...BUT that has gone on for years with all the players at UNC>>>this is not a new thing!!! Been there Seen that for years!!
Yeah, it is not that new. Happens to lots of players from all over the country. The younger fans are paying more attention and are eager to idolize/emulate their local stars.
I know it is hard to gauge anything from this game, but it was nice to see Casey looking effective. It was probably the first time this year, that I can remember her being... comfortable... for lack of a better word. The way she was serving balls into the box made her second half performance look like that NFL commercial... amateurs do it until they get it right, professionals do it until they can't get it wrong... seemed like every ball she touched was going to end up in front of the goal for someone to make a play on... VERY nice... definitely a different side of her play than her goal scoring performances in high school. The other item I thought was worth mentioning were the two girls in the stands with "Ya" signs... such simplicity!... beautiful! Not necessarily calling just Yael out (unless you put them together)... it is hard to find good sign-able nickname that is interesting and supportive of everyone like that... interesting to see fans being a little fanatical... Break out them "Ya" signs...
Although before doing so, Speedo might consider that, as both obscenities *and* personal attacks go, "Speak for yourself, ass" is pretty mild. That said, I think it's true that the anonymity of forums like this (or for that matter my automobile, from which I regularly curse and rail at what I consider the idiocy of other drivers who are doubtless decent people on the whole) makes it easier to express ourselves more sharply to others than we would face-to-face. And of course the nature of the forum also makes it easier for one's comments to come across poorly in the first place, where they may sit unclarified for a much longer time than in an actual conversation, which more typically might have continued something like this: "What?!?" "No, I didn't mean it like that, all I meant was...". Peace?
You know that is just begging for a pun, right? Heck ya I got pictures... The rest of them for the night are here...
The Heels had finesse to the end last night, almost as if they had been hypnotized to believe that they scoreboard was somehow wrong. It was a different type of first round game than usual. Maybe the coach reads this thread (he doesn't) but they were driven to score this time. The most amazing plays to me were several 360 turns by Libby, Jaime, Casey, and well just about anybody who got close. I eat my words, it was they opposite of boring. A precision clinic was the story and I was happy to see the sub pattern keep a strong team on the field. There is no doubt that Perkins scored and it was weird when they robbed of the credit. Glad she got it back. Hea scoreless is a little disappointing but she didn't play much in the second half. Seeing Harris in goal was like when they said Jaime scored when your eyes told you different. Like watching a magic show you begin to doubt reality. The Heels looked dangerous in the second half especially. They hustled every inch of the way. Looks like they're ready for anybody!
If so this change is not reflected in the box score as of noon today. Maybe it will be updated later? Part of me would love to see it credited to Perkins, a non-starting senior who may not see another chance to score in her career; but then again if -- as the recap states -- Jaime chested it in, it's hers (and it would be hugely unfair to her to have it changed). Meanwhile, speaking of goals (or not), can someone explain about Boneparth's (I think) non-goal in the 2nd half? Someone else took a shot, the keeper bobbled it, then Boneparth(?) ran onto the ball and put it in the net. But the officials ruled off-sides. I assume she was in what would have been an off-sides position had the ball been served to her, but it was clearly a shot originally, not a pass; and so I didn't think she was involved in that play -- which you have to be to be called off-sides, right? In which case after the keeper bobbled it, she would then have been on-sides. Then again, to possibly answer my own question, perhaps Boneparth(?) was considered involved even at the point of the original shot (I guess someone charging towards the net from one side while a shot is coming in from the other counts as being involved from the keeper's point of view!), in which case a goal off the original shot, had it gone in, would have been nullified as well.
i looked at the video of jaime's goal several times and in slow motion and it definitely went off her. there are few people who wanted perkins to score more than i, but it was definitely jaime's goal.
She has been widely criticized this year and finally has full match fitness and a desire to score. That and our new keeper should put some worry into opposing coaches, I hope.
