I watched the highlights of juve-depor yesterday night, and something struck me, something that had struck me before but i had never asked :

How come one of the most regular, powerful club in europe has so many empty seats during serie A matches and CL ties.
I mean, yesterday was one of the most important match for juve, but still amybe 25,000 people turned up.

Is there an explanation to such a low intendance every week ?

    Here's a theory:

Juve is an unattractive squad with stuck up/indifferent fans.

That and its unpleasent to sit in that crappy stadium...and its really cold.

The biggest factor is the stadium. The fans have complained since day one that the Del Alpi is not fan friendly to watch a game in. Thankfully it's going to be remolded into a more fan friendly stadium. IF the stadium were like the Meazza you'd be seeing a different picture, it would look more full.

Secondly, Turin has a population of only 400,000. Unlike Milan and Rome which have populations in the millions.

Well that was a bit off...

Still, Juve draws better than Torino.

Torino fans have not have much to cheer about since the mid 70's........that might have something to do with small turnouts.

Chill out Sue...I got a soft spot for ya. You are an excellent Italian soccer patriot and that makes you a great gal.

The thing that makes me mad about teams like Juve and Inter is that they think they can win solely on the advantages of prepared tactics and not on the influence of dynamic players. These teams need players who can create and impress and require that certain freedom to do so. Otherwise the performances turn bland and eventually hurt results. In a way I was kind of dissapointed Juve exited so easily (more ashamed than dissapointed). But like ManU Juve just likes to sit on piles of cash and creep through the player market and picking up obedient/tameable players.

Anyways lets hope their youth system works out well and maybe we'll see some 'real' Juve talent and restore some excitement back to that club.

Believe it or not, I really don't mind Milan. It's some of their fans (like you) who strut about lecturing other teams about how they should or shouldn't play or build their clubs. All on the basis of winning a PK shootout in the CL final last season over a team that was missing its best player.

But yes, I know that's a lot like saying Al Gore should be president of the US right now. Milan won the cup, and there's no argument that they are the best team in Italy right NOW. Given THAT, I hope they can prove to be the best team in Europe as well.

Just enjoy the success of your team and stop the pontificating - that's all I ask.

That has always been the case with Juve all this time specially when match played at Delle Alpi (people dont really like the stadium) and when the games has no BIG meaning anymore....
Its good that Juve is going to have a new stadium though... more like an english style stadium where audience is very close to the field (although I must say this is a very brave move for Italian soccer).

Welcome, Aguss. I guess I didn't realize plans for a new stadium were confirmed, and that it would be an "English-style" stadium. Do you have links to this? This would be great. In fact, yesterday, Fabio Capello a couple of days ago was bemoaning the state of Italian stadiums, which alone among most of the big leagues still have unseated sections and barriers around the fans. It'll be quite an interesting experiment to see what happens if Juve moves away from that.

Thanks. So, it's not 100% clear to me - is this project to revamp Delle Alpi beginning this summer? Will Juve be playing at another venue next season?

About time some other leagues got a clue and realized that, you must cater to the fans. English stlye stadiums are fantastic. Also the intimacy increases the noise and passion.....anything to help the sport in any league...I'm all for it.

I have been surprised that the few Juve matches that I have seen this season, their stadium was quite empty. It is almost a crime in my eyes...such a famous club.

Juve will not be playing in a different venue next year they only recently built the Delli Alpi and selling it or moving would be foolish.

In fact the Delli Alpi was voted one of the best stadiums in Europe. This was based on it's exterior appearence which is one of the best in the world.

The interior however is the problem the seats are too far away from the field and the seats themselves are like benches, not encouraging fans to come see the games. So what the owners have decided is to take out a big lot of thos bench type seats and put in more executive seats this however will make the capacity of the staduim slightly smaller but will encourage fans to come because of the better seating arrangement

One other detracting factor from the stadium is that it is on one end of the city where as their older stadium (shared with Torino) was in the center of the city and sold out almost every game like the Meazza

So, will this renovation be completed over the summer then? Some of the posts/articles from Aguss above implied that it would take longer than that, and during that time, Juve would play somewhere else - that's what I was asking, not whether they were leaving Delle Alpi.

I cant say for sure but from what I have read is that they will (or should) begin this summer and even if they are not complete by the start of next season I would assume they would return to sharing the Communale with Torino for a while until all the renovations were complete
