If you could ensure that one person was 100% healthy, physically and mentally, at World Cup 2006 in Germany, who would you want that person to be. Who do you feel is the most important figure on the Portuguese National team and will ensure our success in Germany? (If we qualify that is)
    Please explain u'r answer!

    1) Pauleta (Our only proven striker, closing down on Eusebio's record)
    2) Deco (World Player of the Year? - The Maestro)
    3) Miguel (One of the most sought after lateral backs in the world)
    4) Ricardo Carvalho (Indispensable to Porto and the Portuguese NT)
    5) Cristiano Ronaldo (Emerging as Portugal's next best player)
    6) Felipe Scolari (Masteful tactician and proven winner)
    7) Luis Figo (If he ever decided to come back to the NT)
    8) Quaresma (Has has the talent to make a huge impact on the NT?)

Why is there Miguel instead of Costinha, Andrade or Maniche?

Because Miguel is more important than Costinha and Andrade, and just as important as Maniche.

I said he is the most underated player in the world, not the best, but hes probably in the top 5 though.

Miguel is as durable as a piece of fine china. He's always injured and can't be counted on to play every game.

I'd say that Carvalho is the most important at this point because he's the most stable on the back line.

I think Miguel is more valuable then Costinha, Andrade, and even Maniche. Maniche's form hasn't been very good, either for his club or for the NT. Costinha is important, but there are players who could fill in admirably I feel (i.e. Petit, Pedro Mendes). As far as Andrade is concerned, I've always been a fan of his and think he's as steady as they come. But Andrade doesn't bring too much to the table offensively, not to the extent of Carvalho, and especially Miguel.

I think its unquestionable that Andrade, Costinha, and Maniche are solid players, but my question was 'Who do you feel is most indispensable to the Portuguese NT'? Are these players indispensable? Could they be replaced? I think we'd be able to get by without them, easier then the likes of Pauleta, Deco, Carvalho, Cristiano Ronaldo, Scolari, Figo(?), Quaresma(?), and yes, Miguel. We could find solid replacements for Costinha and Andrade, even Maniche I believe(Tiago). Remember, I like Maniche and feel he's a very important player...but he has to find his form again.

Note: Quaresma was included because he's such a talented youngster who's not done developing. He's very much a wildcard when it comes to our long-term success in International competitions.

    This is an easy question.
It has to be Deco. He's the QB of the midfield.
He's the most indespensable player for Portugal at the moment hands down especially if Figo is off the team. After Deco it would have to be Carvalho as he anchors the defense. In 3rd comes Ronaldo, no need to explain.

deco is so underrated that he needed to leave porto to let people see what he can really do. plain and simple. ronaldo in a few years will become the next figo but as of right now deco is the main threat still portugal has a bright future and we need to wear shades to really appreciate how much talent we have. :)

Interesting question. I believe this question is much more clear if we flipped it around, as the player that means the most to the NT's success would also be the same player that is the hardest to replace.

Why not rephrase the question as:
"Whose replacement would cause the biggest dropoff in the performance of the NT?"

In this case, then Miguel (and Ronaldo as a distant second choice) would be the obvious answer. As much as I hate to say it, the NT offers a much more menancing look with Miguel in the lineup compared to P. Ferreira or anyone else at the RB position. Miguel offers an attacking threat from the flank that is just isn't there with his replacements (as of right now). Hopefully we can find someone else soon that can attack like him while also able to tackle and mark.

Even at this very moment in time C. Ronaldo is the most important player on the team. The dimension that he brings to an international game is irreplaceable. He has been the best player for Portugal so far in WC 2006 Qualifiers in my opinion. Deco is of course extremely important, but has not in my view brought his form from Club level to the NT yet.

I like Miguel a lot and what he brings to the NT, but don't think that Ferreira is such a dramatic drop-off. If Ferreira can finally bring his club form to the table, then he would be a very adequate replacement for Miguel.

I think Pauleta, Deco, Miguel, Cristiano Ronaldo, Carvalho, Figo(?), Scolari, Quaresma(?)...even Maniche, whom I didn't include on the list are relevant to the national team. But I feel, that Cristiano Ronaldo, at this very moment, is the most irreplaceable and indispensable player of the team.

I rank 'em in the following order:
    1) Cristiano Ronaldo(Portugal's offensive catalyst)
    2) Deco (field general, dictates flow of the game)
    3) Carvalho (strong and steady as they come)
    4) Pauleta (Will he be 1st choice at WC 2006? He's our man now)
    5) Miguel (In 5th, because we've a capable back-up in Ferreira)
    6) Scolari (A reputation that settles his own troops)
    7) Figo (He'd be in 3rd position, if the odds were in him returning)
    8) Quaresma (His continued development is crucial to our success)
