I'm trying to track down what Gooch's squad number for the Nats is, but I've found (after a quick check) that he's worn 22 and 4:

I'm assuming that he's pretty much locked in to start for us at the World Cup, which would seem to indicate that he'd be Number 4, yes?

The ussoccer.com site only lists his number for his club team...

In any case, I'd like to order a kit with his name and number, but I would prefer it be the correct number before forking over 90 bucks....

I have plenty of time, as the new kits haven't even been released yet. I'm pretty sure that we're getting a new home kit for the World Cup, yes?

I'm also aware that the numbers could change when/after Arena names his official squad as well...

Since Bocanegra has more caps, when he's in the squad he wears 4 and Gooch wears 22.

So assuming that both make the WC squad, Gooch will be wearing #22 in Germany.

Getting either one would be accurate. Squad numbers go by seniority, so if Gooch is named to a team that also features Boca, Gooch gets 22 and Boca gets 4. If, as in the Gold Cup, Boca's sitting out, Gooch wears 4. Get whichever number you like better.

A similar example from my own closet: I've got a Dempsey jersey with 2 on it, because that's the number he wears for his club and what he was wearing when he scored in the England friendly, but 8 would've been equally valid; he'll wear either one depending on where Bruce has him in the lineup. My husband's Ralston jersey reads 14, again because that's also his club number, but 19 would've worked just as well.

I've also seen him wearing 2, but if Dempsey makes the squad he'll want the 2 jersey. I'd say Gooch will use 22 at the WC.

Same thing happens with Beasley and Lewis. DMB changes between 7 and 17 for the Nats depending on the status of Lewis. He wears 11 for PSV.

I'd go with 22 as that's what he wore when he dominated Mexico. Good karma with that number.

The bigger decision is whether to put "Onyewu" on the back or "Gooch".

While we're on the subject: so is it just out of superstition/tradition/preference that Keller wears 18 rather than 1?

Get both--just wait until the current kit template is replaced and therefore discounted at various retailers, and get Gooch on that one and Onyewu on the current one.

Come to think of it, I think I'll do just that and get a sale jersey reading TEABAG.

In 2002 Mastroeni was at the bottom of the seniority list, and he wore whatever left over from 1-23.
