I know we have beaten this years six player trade with the Mutts to death but most of that discussion wasn't with the benefit of hindsight. Losing Serna to injury in his second Rev match was a real blow and dramatically deminished any benefits the Revs might have gained from the trade. However, Sernas loss aside, how have the players worked out for their new teams? I don't think Big Mamma has been such a windfall for the Mutts. Sure he had one big, multigoal game but down the stretch the Mutts have been like jello left out in the sun. The same is true of Andy Williams and Teddy. They have played reasonably well but clearly haven't significtly improved the Mutts. (If I'm not mistaken the Mutts have done less well after the trade). As for the Revs, neither Kamler or Hernandez has been spectacular but we had their services when we desperately needed defensive help and a healthy left winger. Of course, if Serna had stayed healthy and gotten on the same page with TnT--who knows where we would be in the standings. So using the Retrospectascope--how do you see the results of the big trade for both teams?
George, I think you are downplaying the ex-Rev's accomplishments since moving to New York. According to http://sports.yahoo.com/mls/stats/ Diallo leads the league in points per 90 minutes and Williams is second to Ralston in # of assists (15-12) despite playing 4 goals less than Ralston. I still think the trade was a bad idea, mainly because of the loss of Williams has left the Revolution without a decent central attacking midfielder. Then again, considering the Revolution's coaching staff hasn't seen any value in having anyone in this position, perhaps it doesn't make any difference any way.
With Nicol as our coach, I really don't think we lost too too much. I was glad to be rid of Diallo, and watching him play for NY/NJ only reinforces that. Andy Williams is a talented player, and I'm sad we lost him, but I can picture him sitting right next to APC on the bench, underutilized and frustrated. I actually liked what I saw of Serna, as well. So in retrospect, it wasn't as bad as it first appeared. At least I don't have to cheer for Big Mama. And GOD I hate the Mutts. Hate hate hate.
I wholeheartedly disagree. I haven't really seen you guys play since the trade, but I can tell you our feelings on the three you sent us: Diallo: On one hand, we're losing patience with the moping, the offsides, the lack of hustle, his weird tendency to wander to the touchline and display his absolutely AWFUL crossing skills. His post-match tirade at OZ for subbing him out was less than impressive also (we WON, smile, be happy)...but, he saved our butts at a crucial time of the season. Without his goals, we're in last place. He totally energized what had been a moribund time for us, and carried us to victory a few times (some games, it was him, Timmy, and NO ONE ELSE). Also, he won over a VERY hostile crowd...his first game, people were handing out buttons crucifying the guy (hell, I was wearing three)...2 games later, people were chanting his name at Mathis-levels. I hate to say it, but I believe he saved his season. Williams: I disagree even more. He's a tireless runner, he actually seems to CARE (can't say that about some of the guys in red and black), and he had a bunch of assists (key ones at that) right after the trade. Most of the time, he's the only link between our defensive players (we play a back four and two d-mids, for fook's sake) and the front players (Diallo, Mathis, Faria). Williams is actually one of our favorite players these days. Chrono: Sucks sucks sucks sucks. In fairness, I hear that left back isn't his natural position. But good lord, I'm convinced this guy is still on your payroll. Bad giveaways, bad defending, pushing way forward and getting burned coming back, and did I mention the bad giveaways? Currently, we greatly desire this guy's benching (Akwari is RIGHT THERE). Oh, and anything was worth the departure of Serna. What a freaking cancer that guy was.
gUYS, We are no better and no worse off after the trade... we sucked before and we suck now. I think the Muts were good before but suck now so its an even trade. -
