Anyone have any? Supposedly it started yesterday with the 20s playing a Regional amateur team. Yet, I went to US Soocer's site, the US Amateur Soccer Association's site (The USASA is the official host), and the festival's official site and found NO SCORES, which is sadly par for the course for this type of thing but also pretty effin pathetic. I also went to the Houston Chronicle's site and they they had no mention of the festival. Any help out there?
I couldn't get there for this one so I don't have any first hand evaluations. I was wondering if anyone else made it?
First Game The U-20's won 2-1 over Region II. Justin Mapp scored the second (and winning) goal. The next game is Tuesday against Region III.
Re: First Game Who were the other goal scorers? Any idea how the plays developed? We're nuts here for that kind of thing, ya know.
The Game The information I received (since I was not present) was sketchy. I do not know how the first goal developed. I was told that Justin beat four defenders by himself and buried a shot from just inside the box. It was supposedly beautiful.
Re: The Game Sweet. Any ideas where Mapp was playing? We've heard he might be playing centrally in addition to the left wing. I actually saw him attack from the right wing for the U17s against El Salvador last year.
Bethlehem, thanks for the 411 - it is greatly appreciated. Between your posts here and on the Burn forum, why do I get the distinct impression that your are privy to some first hand reports? BTW, the next time you talk to your "source" can you give us some info on the mysterious Steve Shirley? Where is he from? What position does he play? Where does or will he go to college or play pro ball? Thanks, and please continue to keep us up to date.
Other Results??? Anybody have any other results?? I am looking for any news on Canada's U20 MT vs Mexico's U20 MT scheduled for 8:00pm last night.
US Soccer Festival Coverage Anyone remember folllowing the US Soccer Festival when it was held Portland a few years ago? Portland had a website that included the roster for every team in the competition. I'd be interested to see the names of the players on the Amateur teams involved this year. Portland's website provided excellent game summaries, lineups and goal scorers for all the games with post game quotes from the coaches. They even had pictures of Bruce Arena watching a game from the stands. Then the tournament went to Rhode Island the next year, where the zero coverage from the USSF and very little in the Rhode Island media, except fot stuff on the Rhode Island state team. There was no website by the RI hosts. Fortunately, I received info from a Canadian that attended the USA U-20/Canada U-20 game. Last year it was in Chicago. The USSF did manage to get the U-18s lineups on their website, since the tournament was based in their backyard. But no rosters for the other teams could be found anywhere. Houston has a pretty nice website. But, it looks like it's more of an informational tool for people running the tournament. They don't seem too concerned with the results. No rosters, lineups or even scores can be found. I've sent emails to the USSF and Houston challenging them to step up their coverage. I'm also planning to contact the webmaster of the Canada website, to see if they can provide info on the USA U-20 team. Maybe Canada will help out. They always have timely lineups and stories on their teams.
You mean Mapp can kick the ball into the goal?? Then why isn't he getting playing time for DC (WE SUCK) United??
Because Ray thinks that players under age 25, who aren't named Santino or Bobby (established before Ray's tenure), are only good for picking up the balls after practice. Mapp can obviously play. Give him a shot Ray! Note: Why the hell did Ray draft Mapp when United had Convey? Both Left-Sided midfielders....... I love Ray, but I wonder......
US Soccer wire confirms Bethlehem's posts (not that we doubted you there Beth!) U.S. UNDER-20s OPEN U.S. AMATEUR SOCCER FESTIVAL WITH 2-1 WIN: The U.S. Under-20 Men’s National Team opened up their participation in the U.S. Amateur Soccer Festival with a 2-1 win over the USASA East Region Team yesterday. Devin Barclay (San Jose Earthquakes - MLS) and Justin Mapp (D.C. United - MLS) scored eight minutes apart to give the U.S. a come-from-behind win. The East squad went up in just the 11th minute, before Barclay's 37th-minute tally and Mapp's 45th-minute score. In other U-20 action, Mexico topped Canada 1-0 with an 85th minute goal. The U.S., who is 1-1-1 in international play this year, will finish the tournament against Canada (Aug. 2) and Mexico (Aug. 3) after meeting the USASA South Region tomorrow (July 30). The Under-20s are using this tournament to prepare for their CONCACAF qualifying tournament in November. The Men’s Group B bracket is comprised of Mexico’s U-20 Men’s National Team, USASA – Midwest Regional Team, USASA – West Regional Team and the Texas-South State Select Team. The following is the U.S. U-20 MNT remaining schedule for the festival: U.S. Under-20 Men’s National Team Schedule Date Opponent Venue Result/Time (CT) July 28 USASA East Region Carl Lewis Stadium 2-1 W July 30 USASA South Region Carl Lewis Stadium 6:30 p.m. August 2 Canada Carl Lewis Stadium 6:30 p.m. August 3 Mexico Robertson Stadium 8 p.m.
Who are you? Who are some of the players on these region teams? Are they current college players? Anyone have any names?
Mapp Let's be fair to Ray, it's not as if Mapp has not received a fair chance to make the team. He had an entire half against Boca Juniors to impress.
Re: Mapp Didn't he also get 2 minutes in an MLS game last week?? He just hasn't shown anything when given the chances.
Living here in Houston I've been able to attend the games here at the Soccer Festival. Here's my recap of the U-20 game vs. Region I (East). The first half featured some solid action with three good goals. (Mapp's was a brilliant solo effort) In the second half, both teams wilted in the heat and the pace slowed. It did get interesting in the final minutes when the East team had an apparent goal called back by the AR. According to the game program, 17 out of the 18 players on the East team are from Connecticut. It listed as their club teams as Union Sports, Mercosur & Bridgeport Italians among others. I was pretty impressed with them. They seemed much better than the Region III (South) team that played in the earlier game. By the way, if anyone wants to know if someone is in the tournament, give me the name and I'll let you know if he's in the game program. I'll send another report after tonight's (Tuesday) games.
Is Moose playing? Just kidding. Are the regional teams USASA rather than USYSA? If so, perhaps a lot of these guys aren't even playing in college I find the USASA web site to be one of the most singularly frustrating in the world of Internet soccer, so I can't quite figure how these serious amateur teams work, but the ones you mention from Conn. don't seem like college summer teams, are they?
TSAS just posted the statistics for the opening games on their website. They forgot to post the starting lineups, but they have subs, scorers, cards, and stats for the openers. http://www.tssas.com/usfest/recent.htm
I'm curious about the starting lineup for the USA U-20 team and the formation of the team (4-4-2?). GK: ??? RD: ?? CD: Cochrane (he was pictured in the HC) CD: ?? LD Simo (he was carded in 3 min ) CM: Saavedra (he was subbed out for Clark) CM: Stone RM: Barclay LM: Mapp F: Cameron (Alvarez replaces in 70 min) F: Wegerle Is Convey at the Festival? I was told that Shirley signed with SMU. WTFK.
