http://www.pbs.org/now/politics/foreignopinion2.html Poll taken in 15 countries, 11 showed more people with a "favorable" or "very favorable" opinion of the US than with an "unfavorable" or "very unfavorable" opinion; in addition, each of the 4 countries that was generally anti-US was a Muslim country, and in all but 1 of the pro-US countries, the "favorable" side had at least 20% more than the "unfavorable" side. Country (% with "favorable" or "very favorable" opinion of US/"unfavorable" or "very unfavorable") Brazil (52%/32%) Mexico (64%/25%) UK (75%/16%) Germany (61%/35%) Russia (61%/33%) Poland (79%/11%) South Africa (65%/28%) Kenya (80%/15%) India (54%/27%) Japan (72%/26%) South Korea (53%/44%) Egypt (6%/69%) Pakistan (10%/69%) Turkey (30%/55%) Jordan (25%/75%) The same poll also shows that respondents in each country thinks it is bad that "American customs and ideas are spreading there"; this is to be expected, however, and shouldn't neccesarily be viewed as anti-US sentiment. It also shows that respondents in most countries believe the US takes other countries' interests into account "not too much" or "not at all" (exceptions were Germany, South Africa, and Kenya); again, however, the important thing is that each and every one of the non-Muslim countries polled had a favorable opinion of the US, and with the exception of South Korea they were all overwhelmingly favorable. But I bet the leftist media isn't going to report this, are they?
Re: Re: Poll taken in 15 countries shows US is viewed extremely well Someone was talking about it on another message board.
Yeah, but to listen to a lot of the lefties people don't even have a favorable opinion of us for that stuff... But it's true, isn't it?
Who? What "lefties" in particular? Alex, you really need to retake freshman English and focus on that chapter on logical fallacies. You throw up straw men on almost every thread you start. I've travelled a good bit and always felt general good will towards my being American, whether it was France or Czech or Morocco. Actually, by far the BEST will towards my nationality was in Morocco, but I wouldn't be too surprised if that has toned down a bit. But even in those Muslim countries, I'd guess that most of the respondents were specifically thinking about U.S foreign policy, which, let's face it, is probably on their minds a lot these days. Brazilians, on the other hand, are certainly less likely to interpret the question so narrowly, since we're not currently occupying a Portugese speaking, Catholic/leftist country. So it shouldn't be odd that they would respond to the question with the holistic sense of all of America's good works and good people in mind.
Alex, are you saying you don't find it ironic that you cite the PBS website, while you rail about the liberal news media squashing it? Kenya's numbers are going to be good because they've been attacked by the same enemy. And more times on home soil.
Well, that jackass farmer in France who seems to make a living out of vandalizing McDonalds' for starters. Same here, ESPECIALLY when I was in Prague in early March--altho I've never been to a predominately Muslim country (unless you count Frankfurt ) Possibly, but...
Verybdog -- www.urban75.net/vbulletin (makes this board look like a neo-con paradise, some of the crap on there is downright scary) It's on the PBS website, yes. Has CNN, ABC, NBC reported it in their TV news? Has the NY Times reported it? Yep. Same reason why we would've gotten good responses if a poll had been taken in Israel, or to a lesser extent Iraq or Afghanistan. Same reason why we got pretty good numbers in Russia, for that matter.
