    Moreno called up to Venezuela

CARSON, CA(Wednesday, October 01, 2003) - Los Angeles Galaxy forward Alejandro Moreno was named today to the Venezuelan National Team for the international friendly against Guatemala on Thursday, October 9, 2003 at Estadio Pueblo Nuevo in San Cristóbal, Venezuela. Moreno's call up marks his first-ever to the national team and earns him the opportunity to post the first full CAP of his international career, possibly making him only the second player in MLS history to play for Venezuela.

"We're very pleased that the Venezuelan technical staff has recognized Alejandro's contributions to the Galaxy," said Galaxy Vice-President and General Manager Doug Hamilton. "It is a well deserved call up for Alejandro, who is a promising young player and has worked extremely hard day-in and day-out since joining the Galaxy."

Venezuela, who are 0-2-0 in CONMEBOL qualifying to 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany, suffered losses against Equador (2-0) on Sept. 6 and Argentina (3-0) on Sept. 9 to open qualifying. The friendly against Guatemala is in preparation for two more upcoming World Cup qualifying matches against Colombia on Nov. 15 in Barranquilla, Colombia, and Bolivia on Nov. 18 in Maracaibo, Venezuela.

"Every little kid in Venezuela who plays soccer dreams about playing for the national team," said Moreno. "I had that dream too, but once I came here (Los Angeles) I wanted to be sure that I made an impact with the Galaxy, then things would fall in to place."

The 24-year-old Moreno earned high marks for his play in the front line of Sigi Schmid's alignment during last season's MLS Cup championship run and has again this year. A native of Caracas, Venezuela, Moreno has appeared in 38 games (19 starts) with three goals and four assists for 10 points. A 5-11, 170-pound forward, he scored his first career MLS goal on July 4, 2003 against the New England Revolution in front of 27,000 fans at a sold-out Home Depot Center.

The Los Angeles Galaxy hit the road this Saturday, October 4 to meet the Chicago Fire in the last MLS regular season game to be played at Cardinal Stadium on the campus of North Central College in Naperville. The 5:30 pm match will be televised live on KCAL 9. Fans can tune in at 5 pm for the club's pre-game show, Galaxy Countdown. Galaxy fans can also listen live over the airwaves on KRLA 870 AM (English) and KTNQ 1020 AM (Spanish).
