    'massive protests'?

i don't see massive protests at popular sports, i can't see it happening for a foreign soccer player.

As if there weren't umpteen hundred other figures in other sports that they could protest.

    More on Gazza and Gangs

For the record this article came from John Haydon not the Journalism 101 intern Ken Wright (who enjoys covering girls soccer more these days...)

--Personally I figured this wife stuff was all crap stirred up in English papers until Haydon mentioned that Ray Hudson acknowledged his quotes on the subject in the Brit reports. So... who knows? --Kind of sad if true really. As others have pointed out there just as many people in other sports that deserve this more (ie football rapists... boxing rapists... etc.)

Also of semi-related interest to us in this Saturday's Wash Times... There was a report on an area Salvadorian gang named MS-13 (Mara Salvatrucha)
--while it has nothing to do with soccer, it does mention that they are now being recognized as one of the most dangerous gangs in the country. Apparently they sent some "boys" up from Orange County to kill a random Fairfax County policemen. A real bad bunch of hombres. Let's just hope they never show up here!!! (For the record I dont think this means crap to DC United and dont want to scare people, BUT... at the same time its good to know of these things so we can keep our eyes peeled...)

What's saddest about Haydon's article is that with United's biggest game of the year this week, this was the only article in either the Post OR the Times this week. Two papers, a combined 14 editions - 1 article.

How far we've fallen. The Post hasn't had an actual United article since last Friday and the Times hasn't had a United article since Haydon's last Saturday. Sad.

It's winning time, not whining time

It does seem that often when people are doing terrible things that they are rewarded, and that when they reform they are punished. I'm sure Gazza will perservere, and so will United. We didn't really need Gazza this season, and we definitely do not need Zambrano. I would have much preferred the draft pick, and I think this rates as the worst personnel move in the Kasper/Hudson era.

As for the media coverage, I believe the Post's management has put its foot down and said no press to a bottom dwelling soccer team. If we make the playoffs, maybe then we'll get some pub, but likely not until then.

It's winning time, not whining time.

Let's get our act together and focus on playing the game. Forget the media, Hudson, All-Star status, sacred cows, contracts, and the offseason, and focus on one goal, the Metros. This team has the talent, don't BS your way around it. Now they just have to come to play. If United shows up, they beat the Metros, period. If not, well then it's already the offseason now isn't it.

If they had threatened massive protests inside the stadium, I'm sure the deal would have been signed.

I mean, they would do just about anything to get massive crowds inside the stadium.

Sounds like a rehash of speculation really. I guess it's better than no coverage, but some coverage of the dismal season would be more appropriate.

    and
Interestingly, protests of this nature only seem reserved for "foreigners". For example, while Tyson doesn't (appear) to have such protests here, when he fought in Scotland their was immense negative public reaction from the women's groups. So, it is coneivable that the women's groups here would target a foreigner in this way. Sadly :(
