does anyone know if i can watch the match on saturday anywhere on the internet (preferably for free!)? and who is everyone supporting? im going for the national team, but i'll be happy whoever wins.

Not if you live in Birmingham, England. Channel 5 shows some tape-delayed MLS games in the UK, so check their schedule.

home-made tapes taped from the tv wont work in this country. store-bought ones are fine though... could i buy a copy off abc?

Tape might work, if a special "multi-system" video player is used, the one that supports not only NTSC standard, but PAL also. I think, AKAI models do that. And I hope, there should be places in England where it's possible to make a copy from a video tape, translating it to the correct format.
