The 2002 DCI World Championships wrapped up tonight in Madison. The results:

    12. Seattle Cascades 84.05
    11. Magic 84.85
    10. Spirit 85.45
    9. Crossmen 89.1
    8. Glassmen 91.0
    7. Bluecoats 91.5
    6. Boston Crusaders 92.4
    5. Phantom Regiment 92.4
    4. Santa Clara Vanguard 95.65
    3. Cadets 96.75
    2. Blue Devils 97.3
    1. Cavaliers 99.15

No, that's not a misprint - Cavaliers set a new DCI record for highest score ever (not to mention an undefeated season).

Feel free to discuss your favorite corps-related issues here.

It's definitely a midwest thing -- drum corps make Up With People look like Slayer.

    Fair enough.

Count me as a big Phantom Regiment supporter from here on in.

Corps can be described as "professional" marching bands. Good to see Seattle do well for a first yr. division 1 corps. Saw their show, it was good.

Is the #10 Spirit the former Spirit of Atlanta? They placed fourth in '79 and '80, and never got to that level again. Great sound back then, could have done without the southern-themed arrangements and the redneck flag worship thing. Got quite a few DCI albums and tapes from my high school days (snare, timpani)

These corps aren't professional at all- musicians pay many dollars to join, and can only stay in until they're 21. They're not technically marching bands because they have no woodwinds- just brass and percussion. They also used to use two-valve bugles, but now they use regular three-valve horns. There are corps for adults (21 +), but they're not as good, nor are they as popular.

'Tis. They were SoA, then funding went south and they teamed up with Jacksonville State U. to become JSU Spirit before branching out on their own again.

They're getting their old sound back now - granted, it's with some Bb horns mixed in, but it's still almost vintage Spirit.

Well I didn't really think it about it that much. You are very right in saying that they are not "professional". When I said it, I meant it in terms of that it takes a lot more to be in DCI than in a regular marching band. You know, you have to be more displined and professional.

this was one of the stronger years in recent DCI history, which is good to see. Bummer for Madison Scouts, but, based on what I saw of them in July, their fall was probably deserved. Good to see my hometown corps make finals. I remember when the Cascades were a joke of a Div III corps that could barely hold up their horns!

By the way, Trooper, I listen to that CD you made me all the time. Thanks!

If you believe the DCI mouthbreathers, it's all an anti-Scott Stewart conspiracy. :p

No worries, Scoey. Just be sure to get yourself some of those Legacy DVDs!

DCI Mouthbreathers...redundancy personified...people take Corps so seriously. It is what it is: a bunch of kids working hard, learning, and having fun. That's all it should be. Its not the x-files. Its not life.
