Madrid Forever?? I can start the thread now safe in the knowledge that you are probably having a beer somewhere getting ready to watch the game. Or maybe you are watching at home. I'm jealous!

Everyone is available except for Portillo (gastroenteritis) and Minambres, who's been injured forever it seems. I would expect to see Helguera back in the central midfield with Beckham, and Pavon back in central defense alongside Raul Bravo.

Today is Figo's birthday. I'm betting he will score. This should be a good game, actually. Partizan put up a fight in the Bernabeu without some of their best players, and today's game is in Belgrade where I understand it's pretty cold. It won't be easy, but a win will qualify Madrid for the next round and allow Queiroz to rest key players in the upcoming games against Porto and Marseille. (Actually, I believe a tie plus a Porto win against Marseille would mean the same thing).

Aw yeah today is Figo´s b-day, hope he scores.

If Real wins today (and I think they will) they'll be practically qualifying for the next roud.. Plus I think this time Real will score more goals, because Partizan will have to go forward, and that will give Real plenty of space to catch them on the break.. hala madrid

There is seriously something funny looking about this picture. The guy in the middle looks superimposed of something. Not to mention Beckham.

I saw some of the match and Madrid were a bit fortunate it ended 0-0. Late in the match a Partizan shot was saved by Casillas and the rebound was put wide by the Partizan forward with the entire goal at his mercy. The field was in bad shape due to rain and it effected Madrid's ball movement. I thought Beckham played pretty well and Pavon and Helguera controlled the Partizan forwards. Ronaldo was pretty well marked out of the match by Taribo West and Raul continued to struggle. The midfielders had, as I mentioned, troubles playing the ball on the heavy field.

Overall it looked to me like Madrid were happy to get the draw which now qualifies them for the second round. Can't complain about that!

The bad news was the early hamstring injury which Roberto Carlos suffered. He should be out at least two weeks. It's almost inconceivable to think of Madrid without Roberto Carlos. I can't ever recall him missing that much time through injury during his many years with Madrid. Can anyone else?

I don't know.... the defense needs him. His defensive skills are the most underrated in the world.

When Roberto carlos came off Guti came in the midfield with Helguera dropping back into central defense and Raul Bravo moved out to left back. Overall Madrid's defense played fairly well but they did give some opportunities to Partizan and Raul Bravo was caught ball watching several times on the left. Pavon and Helguera, however, made a very good central defensive combo.

Losing Roberto Carlos will hurt Madrid no question about it. Raul Bravo isn't a bad repalcement but there is no substitute for Roberto Carlos and his dynamic play. Bravo probably can fill in adequately defensively but Madrid will lose soemthing on the offensive end.

I think that the draw was the correct result for the merit of both teams.

I liked the play of Real Madrid in the first half. They had a very good aptitude, they played agresive recovering many balls in the middle, and without problems in defense. And it wasn't a easy game, atmosphere against the team, with very bad field, with the other team making a lot of hard fouls - in some moments of the first half it was "Beckham hunting", he must have blows in all his body, but the referee didn't show any yellow card in the first half.

In the second half the team played more relaxed, and Partizan played better. But both team it seem very tired in the last minutes of the game.

When a watch Roberto Carlos injured in the first minutes the sensation was like it wasn't real, like "he is human". I don't recall see him leave the field injured in his 7-8 years in Real Madrid. Today, A journalist in TV has said the he hasn't play 4 games for injury in all his years with Real Madrid. Incredible!!! Because we know that RC play all the games, the managers never let him rest, he play all la liga, Copa del rey, friendlies, Champions league, ....

His defensive skills are the most underrated in the world.

Yeah, I think that there are 3 reasons so that a person say that RC defensive skills aren't great: he don't know anything about soccer, he hasn't watch him play, he has serious mental problems. The players and managers of the other teams in europe always speak great about Roberto Carlos offensive and defensive skills.
In the last 2 years he has been named the best defender of the Champion league, with the votes of Managers like Marcello Lippi, Sir Alex Ferguson, Gérard Houllier, Giovanni Trapattoni and Rinus Michels, and the votes of the uefa.com users.

Roberto Carlos is has GREAT/PERFECT defensive skills. He is impossible to pass in speed, and in one by one he is simply great. He is the best in his position in the world, and one of the best in the history of soccer. Some people perhaps could criticize him that he leaves spaces in his back when he attack, but it wouldn't be his error it would be the Real Madrid style of play error. And when he attack he helps very much the Real Madrid offensive play, he has made 50 goals with RM t-shirt. I think that there isn't another player in the world in his position with so many goals.

How did Real's defense look without Carlos?

Roberto Carlos is a essential player for RM. It's impossible replace RC in the team.

We have serious problems for the next game against Sevilla in Sevilla. Roberto won't play (injured), and Salgado won't play (5 yellow cards). Miñambres the players that could replace Salgado is injured, and Raul Bravo the player that could replace RC is playing as CB in the last 3 months. We saw that Raul Bravo against Partizan didn't play good. And Helguera is also injured and he doubt for the Sevilla game.

Is there any chance that Solari will take over RC's role for the next couple of weeks?

Madrid Forever is correct Roberto Carlos is irreplaceable. In my opinion he is the greatest left back of all time. Perhaps others, like Maldini and Nilton Santos were better pure defenders, but there isn't a single player who has been able to control his side of the field, both offensively and defensively like Roberto Carlos can. RC certainly is underated defensively but it is the complete package that he brings which makes him such a special player.

For the short term I do believe Raul Bravo can do an aceptable job defensively filling in for Roberto Carlos. Bravo will be able to defend well enough, so long as he doesn't ball watch like he did in Belgrade. Solari is another option on the left and he would bring more offensive output there but of course his defending won't be as good as Bravo's.

It's an interesting choice ahead for Queiroz. But if Helguera is unable to play v Sevilla then the choice will be made for him as Bravo will stay in the middle and Solari will be at left back.

Oh and to answer a question I posed earlier in this forum, this will be the first time in Roberto Carlos' 12 year professional career that he will have to miss a match due to injury!

Here's a portion of an EFE article i found on AOL:
