How unfortunate that one of the best 50 women's soccer players of all time had her final World Cup truncated after three-quarters of an hour with a broken foot.

I guess it is fortunate that it is not the left (for her, non-dominant) that she kept on making PKs with her in training that got the attention of the coaching staff, making her the choice for PK No. 5 rather than Julie Foudy.

I hope for a full recovery for the Olympics.

    Get well, Hollywood.

What is your link to the fact she has a broken foot? ussoccer.com doesn't have anything about this. I know she was hurt but so far there hasn't been any determination on how bad as far a I know.

Third metatarsal bone in her right foot. Out for the Nigeria and North Korea games for sure, perhaps longer.

Thanks! It's a shame that Brandi got hurt not just for her but for the team too. I thought the defense looked much better when Brandi was in there. Hopefully she will be able to make it back in the later rounds!

X-rays showed Chastain broke the third metatarsal

Dr Lane? Anyone? Can we have a summary of what bone it is and/or how it limits motion and movement. Also how likely it is she can play in the later rounds?

If I'm not mistaken this is the same bone David Beckham broke in April 2002 right before the World Cup. His was the second metatarsal (the bone behind his second toe), Brandi has broken her third metatarsal (the one behind her middle toe). I have absolutely no idea how the two breaks compare in terms of severity, but I cannot imagine that this will heal by the knock-out rounds. I'm sure if Brandi can, she'll try to play through it, but I have to say that this sounds like very bad news.

broken metatarsals are a very common foot injury. those bones are the long ones that attach to the toes and make up the bridge of your foot. its hella easy to break them if you get hit just right because there's not much there besides skin. it's not an injury you can just tape up, so in all liklehood she won't be playing. should be looking at 6 to 8 completely off it

The only silver lining is that Cat Reddick look very good in place of Chastain.

She's not in the Hamm/Akers/Morace/Sundhage/Sun/Fan atmosphere, but for sheer drama (a la Gale Sayers), she bears the mantle of greatness.
