I can hardly wait for the 2003 Super Draft. I wonder if Yallop will get any better at his early round selections. Remember that we will have our first round pick, plus we traded for NE(?) second round pick also.
After last year I thought FY was good at trading and bad at drafting. Now I've been forced to re-evaluate. Eddie R now looks like a find. And Carierri, even though he sucked for SJ, looks like he COULD turn out to be a decent MLS player, albeit not first round caliber. Jury is still out on this year's picks: LG and CR, although Yallop obviously sees something in them since they are still on the team.
Wasn't Roner one of the last players to be selected by the Quakes? I remember two others that were ahead of him, one from Duke and the other from San Jose State. There really is no way to predict who we could go for now. But for positions, I can see us looking for another central back and a winger. I hope we draft Freddy Adu.
As far as I remember, he was signed as Developmental Player during this season, not selected from the draft.
You don't automatically get a contract if you're drafted. Lucci was probably signed at the same time as Roner. Are there any youth tourneys that the US will participate in between now and then? Any players that might enter the draft that Yallop might want to develop?
Re: Re: 2003 Super Draft The youth tourneys coming up are (I think) going to happen after the draft. There are plenty of good players though that will be coming to the MLS. I hope that CJ Klaas of the UW Huskies will sign with the league and that the Quakes get him. High quality defender.
ldb...why this fascination with Revs players?? First Ralston, now this?? (Oh, wait...was this the sarcasm thing again?)
Really? I immediately assumed he was serious because Ralston is a great player. MLS assist leader. Think about what that would do to the Quakes attack! I just don't think we have a chance in hell of getting him (without giving up the farm). Of course this is NE we are talking. I just read on MLSnet that NE traded Graziani for Alvarez and Pareja for Damian just before the deadline. So maybe FY can dress up Bower and Ibsen real purdy like, and entice the Krafts. But then we'd have to re-define the term 'getting Krafted'.
Here are various Youth National team players that are now in MLS. The majority who are actually playing consistantly and well. Of them the Quakes only has one player. Most of these guys are also or were P-40. So they don't count against the salary cap or roster. Why didn't the Quakes draft one of these guys in previous drafts. And we did have high enough picks to do so also. 2001 Under-20 U.S. World Youth Championship Team (nine current MLS players): GK D.J. Countess (Dallas Burn), D Nelson Akwari (MetroStars), M Kelly Gray (Chicago Fire), M DaMarcus Beasley (Chicago Fire), M Brad Davis (MetroStars), M/F Landon Donovan (San Jose Earthquakes), M Bobby Convey (D.C. United), M Kyle Martino (Columbus Crew), F Edson Buddle (Columbus Crew). 2001 Under-17 U.S. World Championship Team (five current MLS players): M Craig Capano (Chicago Fire), M Justin Mapp (D.C. United), M Jordan Stone (Dallas Burn), F Edward Johnson (Dallas Burn), F Santino Quaranta (D.C. United) 1999 Under-20 U.S. World Youth Championship Team (11 current MLS players): GK Nick Rimando (D.C. United), GK Tim Howard (MetroStars), D Nick Garcia (Kansas City Wizards), D Danny Califf (Los Angeles Galaxy), D Rusty Pierce (New England Revolution), D Nick Downing (New England Revolution), D Lee Morrison (Dallas Burn), D Carlos Bocanegra (Chicago Fire), M Francisco Gomez (Kansas City Wizards), F Chris Albright (Los Angeles Galaxy), F Taylor Twellman (New England Revolution) - (Note: Both Jamar Beasley and Shaun Tsakiris are former MLS players) 1999 Under-17 U.S. World Championship Team (seven current MLS players): GK D.J. Countess (Dallas Burn), D Nelson Akwari (MetroStars), D Seth Trembly (Colorado Rapids), M DaMarcus Beasley (Chicago Fire), M/F Landon Donovan (San Jose Earthquakes), M Bobby Convey (D.C. United), M Kyle Beckerman (Colorado Rapids)
Here are 3 guys on the U-17 National team that would be good to have to develope and who could contribute within a year or two of playing with the Quakes: John DiRimondo (sp) Guillermo Gonzalez Corey Ashe
So no one has any thoughts on possible draft picks? There aren't any good players at SJSU or Santa Clara? Cronin from SC would be a good young keeper to draft if Cannon does indeed leave after this season.
