What are the chances of Madrid getting in for either of these two now that Steven Gerrard is a definite no?

Arsenal don't seem to want to sell Patrick Vieira, but Juventus is still trying. Anyone think that Madrid might jump in at some point and hijack the bid? He could be the kind of player that Madrid need in the back of the midfield.

Ballack is more offensive minded, but he could do equally well. I'm surprised there hasn't been more on him leaving Bayern, as he only has one year left, has said he'd like to play outside of Germany, and Bayern can't or won't offer him huge money to stay.

I'm just a bit surprised these two aren't getting a bit more discussion regarding Madrid.

In reference to Viera, Real Madrid walked up to the cliff, looked down at the abyss and shuffled back to safety last year. Our club doesn't need to do that again.

A month ago, we talked about Ballack. It died down. It seemed that we are getting more discussion again.

Vieria did not happen last year.... it won't happen this year. I would rather discuss about Eissen or some other newer names.

Yeah, I agree that we won't be looking seriously at Vieira unless something outrageous happens -- i.e. Arsenal agree to sell him for like 2m euros, or he refuses to show up for any Arsenal events until they let him go to Real, etc. We came very close to paying a lot for him last season, and he didn't have that great of a year. He's now a year older, a little bit slower, will still demand high wages, and we, finally, seem to have a pretty good little group of players that can play the position -- Gravesen, Pablo Garcia, and Helguera can still move up and play it if need be.

Ballack is a little more realistic, but I don't think that we will end up getting him. I feel that he won't want to leave Bayern this season, as it is important for him to play consistently so that he is sharp for the WC. At Real he wouldn't necessarily be guaranteed a starting role every game. Also, while I think he's a very good player, I'm not sure how well his game would fit in Spain, and at Real specifically. He usually is the vital piece of the puzzle in the teams he plays in -- everything goes through him both for Germany and Bayern -- and it's no guarantee he'd do well as a player that only sees the ball on occasion, where not everyone's looking for him all the time.
