    VCU 2 UVA 1

First time that VCU has defeated UVA.

UVA falls to 8-9 on the season. They need a strong run in the ACC tournament to keep their NCAA hopes alive.

VCU needs no help in making NCAA's.

VCU is very strong again this year. Delicate and Cephas played together all summer with Richmond in the PDL and it looks like that is paying dividends now. The team should be the favorite to win the CAA tournament this year since they're hosting and ODU has been hit with big injuries. I would not be surprised to see the Rams earning a seed in the NCAA's again, hopefully doing something with it this year.

UVA I think is going to need to make the final again to have a chance to get in. They need to hope there aren't upsets in weaker conferences either where the top team that is sure to get in loses and takes up an at-large. Problem is that UVA is running into a Clemson team that is almost in the exact same boat. Should be quite a game on Wednesday.

Dude, they need to WIN the damn thing.

    That's their only hope, literally.

Do the math. If they make the final but lose, that's two wins and a loss, which puts them at 10-10 and that ain't getting them in.

I'd love to hear details on this one because the SID write up on UVA's website doesn't tell much. For example, even though UVA lost, how did they look? I notice they started Paul Johnson as a defender, which is what BGG did at the beginning of the season.

I totally agree with Sandon, the Cavs need to win the ACC's to make the big dance.

At the risk of douching (I think that means being overly verbose), here is my view of the game last night.

First, congratulations to the Rams as I think this was the first time they’ve beaten the Cavs.

I’d first like to highlight 4 players from VCU that played exceptionally. Montero in goal did a really good job and made some good saves. He took a lot of fire from Cav forwards that suffer from the same disease all year – not finishing. Delicate was winning everything in the air against a Cav defense that seemed disinterested. Ugarte squared off with Vide and both took turns showing good stuff, while at times also stifling the other. Cephas was dangerous all night. He made a beautiful scissors goal that would make top 10 on ESPN.

Here’s my view of the Cavs:
Burke:did a very good job of keeping the score down with some flying saves.
Tuman: part of the problem (involved in both scores and other dangerous attacks)
Johnson: played healthy for once and was really aggressive. Played for the injured Oliver. His speed and strength made up for mistakes of other defenders
Hartman: played relatively solid, except being involved in the scores with Tuman
Freeman: played very good with some quick foot skills. He’s their best defender when Oliver isn’t in the game
Dinnall: creative on left mid, but a little awkward making things happen because he can’t create with his left foot.
Hill: played attacking mid without much attack; lack of creativity hurts Cav attack. His goal was a surprise, and lifted the Cavs after they went down.
Hall: strong, but not creative; needs to stop taking 35 yd shots and just do what he does best – protect the ball out of the back and start things going in a calm manner.
Harrision: sub in second half created nicely on left side. Didn’t lose the ball as much as he has done in the past.
Hinkle: zero; like playing with a man down; hardly touches the ball
Megaloudis: sub in second half; did a really nice job when not playing tentative; I’ve hoped from the start that he would get more playing time
Vide: started at right mid; good hustle and skill; showed lots of good stuff, but I sensed that his confidence has been stifled; he’s not the same player as the beginning of the year because of it
Littlefield: lots of good hustle, but just can’t finish; not good with back to goal
Cristmann: don’t see why he’s playing; he simply cannot finish and when he has the ball, he can’t distribute to open mates; he must be liked because of his size cause there’s not much else there
Holder: his skills are much better than Cristmann; a front including him would be much more effective as long as he keeps his confidence; he needs to work harder too

Surprised that Yi didn’t see time; he could help out with the non-productivity up front. Same with Burwell, but he has to get into shape and work harder.

Same plague as all year; can’t finish.

A high tempo game right from the start. UVA sent many players forward in attempt to press VCU. VCU looked a little out of sync at first as they were forced to play the long ball. UVA kept a good amount of pressure throughout the half, but did not succeed in scoring.
UVA was dead in the second half after exerting all energy in the first, and VCU looked to be the fitter team. VCU looked like a much better team in the second half as they played a mix b/w short and long balls, which exposed the UVA defense.

    My overall opinion:
UVA- athletic but lacked creativity. They leave themselves exposed at the back by putting numbers forward.

VCU – A very organized and smart team. Adapted well to the high tempo game.
Would like to see them do well in the tourney

a good point nfan, vcu substituted liberally in the first half, and the first sub for uva didn't come until fairly deep in the second half (as best that i can remember).

    the game

went to the game.....great atmosphere. UVa was high pressure all over the place. Christman missed a few early.......he is athletic but lacks in skill and ideas. Both VCU forwards are better players. Cephas scored an unbelievable side scissor. It has to be one of the top goals all season in college soccer. UVa ran out of steam in 2nd half as the pressured like crazy in the 1st half. They dont have enough ideas and creativity to play. Just relying on long balls and flick on's. Typical example of what is wrong with college soccer.

In the 2nd half VCU were able to play at times. They are a talented team with much more creativity. On the UVa web site they keep posting their overall record VS VCU. I am not sure how this applies to the current state of affairs. I think this is the 6th or 7th year O'Sullivan has been at VCU. Looks like BGG and crew are living off past accomplishments. From what I have seen VCU is a better team and a team on the rise. UVa with all their national teamers might not make the NCAA's. I think its time for UVA to focus on the present. Bruce is gone folks.things are not the same in Charlottesville !
John Harkes was seen roaming about the stands. Was he in town for an interview?

UVA lacks finishing by its forwards but I do not think the team lacks creativity. The VCU game (especially the first half) was another good example of that. Virginia created many more good scoring opportunities than VCU. It has been that way most of Virginias season. They had some real nice combination play out of the back and through the midfield and played some great balls forward but nothing got put away. You put those goals away and everyone is saying how creative the team is. They create enough opportunities - just don't finish them. VCU on the other hand made the most of their chances and their first goal was a great one. The tandem of Littlefield and Cristman has a combined total of 8 goals in 16 games with both playing the entire 90 most games. Virginia needs to do better.

The defense has played strong enough to win all year and has even held up with the big loss of central defender Matt Oliver. They match up good with Clemson. I'll hope for some goals.

    Re: the game

He said he came to heckle. Brought the whole fam to the game, then flew to Cali the next morning to do the show. What a nice guy.

VCU will do well in the post-season. I'm just glad to have some nearby NCAA action, its been a long time since I've gone without.

Besides being a UVA alum, Harkes is a close friend of VCU assistant coach Rob McCourt from their days in Kearny.

Good to see the Rams get the UVA monkey off their backs. We've been close the past few years but seemed to run into bad breaks, especially at Klockner. When Cephas and Delicate are on, they are a load to handle. I hope I get a chance to look at the game tape to see that scissors goal by Cephas, sounds like a beauty.

At 14-4, the Rams are set up nicely for the postseason. If they get a pair of wins at the CAA Tournament, which they host, I think a top 8 seed is a real possibility. Then maybe the Rams can get the NCAA monkey off their backs and make a run in the tourney (VCU is 0-4 in NCAA games).

    gettin sick

i just read in the cavalier daily where bgg said that 'cristmann....is doing great'. folks, no wonder the guy doesn't score. bgg treats him like a baby. he needs to get a swift kick in his diaper the next time he misses a 6 yarder, or cool his a$$ on the aluminum until he gets the message. the next time cristmann misses an open man someone on that bench should rip into him.

bgg should have been experimenting more with the forwards this year than the midfield. the forwards are where his problem lies. this is typical of bgg - coddle his favorites even though they don't produce, and berate the skilled ones that he personally doesn't like. it makes me ill.
