The Atlantic Cup (not that Liberty Cup rubbish) - Can we at least win this?

Apparently not satisfied with the vote that named the derby between DC United and the MetroStars the Atlantic Cup, the MetroFans, in their collective wisdom (who knew), have chosen to try to rename the derby the Liberty Cup.

    http://www.metrostars.com/metronews/submissions/2002/august/08252002v1.htm

So as it stands now the derby has two names and the official name, the name that will stand in perpetuity, will be chosen by the winner of the derby at the end of the season.

Currently DC United is leading that derby on goal differential.

    Game 1 - DC United 4 : 2 MetroStars
    Game 2 - DC United 0 : 1 MetroStars

Now unlike the Brimstone Cup US Open Cup matches do not count in the Atlantic Cup. They should but they don't, and, of course it doesn't matter this year anyway.

There remain, then, but two matches between us and bragging rights.

Winning this derby, I think, should now become the primary goal for this season. Contrary to what the pollyannas contend, we won't make the playoffs. We're not in the Open Cup. What else is there?

This cup, I know, is somewhat contrived even if the rivalry is quite real. But this is MLS and, well, what isn't initially contrived? So I say that we should take this seriously. Let us win the cup, secure it's rightful Atlantic Cup name (like I'm ever going to call it anything else anyway) and deprive the MetroStars of this one little bit of glory.

Who knows, maybe we'll even get a trophy.

Hell - make two trophies. One for the games in NY, one for the games in DC. The challenge is to win both in one year.

Who gives a rats ass? I don't need a cup to have a rivalry with the Scum. All I need is my hate.

And I have plenty of that.

    327 votes - from metrostars.com

"The name Atlantic Cup received its share of votes in the write-in column, but not enough to overtake The Liberty Cup. Only one submission was allowed per person (ISP). The poll received a total of 327 votes."

Why don't we just win the rest of our games this season, take the Atlantic Cup and make the playoffs?

    Zambrano is the answer.

Freakin get it together and beat the Metros. We should be winning with any help from the offense. Let's get the darn trophy so we can name it the Atlantic Cup already.
