It looks like, come 2004, the Burn are going to be overloaded with SI's, and I was wondering who everybody thought we should keep.

    SI's 2004:
Tenywa Bonseu - It seems like he should have been in the US long enough to apply for a green card; does anybody know the situation?

Steve Morrow - Obviously, will be a SI next year, unless we move him over to full time coaching position or he leaves, which is looking more and more likely with each game he misses.

Toni Nhlecko - If we keep him, he will be a SI next season. He's been productive, but has he been that productive?

Ronnie O'brien - SI next year, and in my mind, the only guy that we're certain to be retaining.

Joselito Vaca - He will only be 21, but I believe there were rumors about him being bumped up last offseason, and it has to be likely once he's finished his third year.

Additionally, we will have an allocation, which I guess we could spend on an american if there were any valuable americans looking to come home overseas (Cory Gibbs and Jovan Kirovski are the only two possibilities I can think of ). However, it seems likely that we'll be spending the allocation on a SI.

Shavar Thomas - I'm pretty sure he's still a TI next year.

The intent is pretty clear anyway. I think it's a foregone conclusion that Morrow will be moving on, hopefully to coaching with the Burn. Still that leaves us no room to add an SI if Nklecko stays. Unless his production goes up significantly, I'm not sure he does. Don't get me wrong, he looks great out there, but one goal in all the games since he's been here may not be a good enough strike rate to hold down a precious SI spot which we desperately need in central midfield to replace the aging Deering/Pareja combo. And please don't talk to me about Stone.

I suppose Bonseau could be let go, but despite his current form, that would put us back at square one on the backline. Still, it's a possibility.

Where should you use an SI spot?

Goalie - no there are plenty of very good US goalies.

Defender - not unless they are the organizer, there are quite a few good US players to play the outsides and the non-organizing center D.

Midfield - yes if they are the schemer a true #10. Etch, Valdarama, Lionel, but there are plenty of good US defending mids and wing mids

Forward - yes, the US lacks enough true finishers

Bench player - no, SIs must be starters.

Of course all these "rules" go out the window if there is a truly exceptional SI.

    So:
Morrow - yes, if he can still play and Dunseth can't be the organizer, (Dunseth did a good job as organizer in last Saturdays game), but Morrow probably won't be playing.

T-Bone - no, not the organizer, Thomas can be a good central D, someone else will have to be the organizer.

Vaca - maybe if he is the #10 starter, but not if he is sitting on the bench, kinda like Zarco.

Toni - yes, if he is starting, creating and scoring. I think it has taken some time to start scoring. Lets see if he continues to score/assist in the remaining games.

Ronnie O'Brian - yes, he is the exceptional player.

The count, Toni, Ronnie and Vaca if he is starting.

So the question is can we get an SI allocation that is better than Vaca?

I think this is a pretty good evaluation of where SI's should be used, but I disagree with your statement about forwards. No, perhaps US forwards do not have the quality that we might like, but Americans pretty much dominate the Budweiser scoring leaders chart. Of the top 15 Scorers (goals and assists), only three are not Americans (Ruiz, Spencer, Ralph) and one of those came through the draft. Additionally, neither Ruiz nor Spencer came as an allocation; both were discovery picks. In 1999, on the other hand, 9 out of the top 15 were foreigners. Although some may say this is an indicator that the quality of the league is declining, I think it is more likely a sign that the American forwards are improving. I don't think that we are going to see a reversal of this trend: top established strikers are not going to come to MLS to play for $250,000. Although it's nice to imagine bringing in ace strikers on an allocation, I don't think it's much of a possibility.

So, basically, I think what we need from our likely allocation is a midfielder, whether that be defensive or offensive doesn't much matter to me, but I guess it means Vaca may be out the door.

It's not a rumor really. I posted that info as a possibility. Players below age of SI become SI based on money. See Andy Williams. Another example is Toni who is an Sen. Int. RIGHT NOW because of his contract.

Vaca could be if he gets a big enough raise. but since he should be under his original contract for one more year I doubt he will get that much money.

And yes Thomas will be a TI in 2004.

I agree with the Mariscalo opinion. His talent could be developed.

Had no idea about Bonseu. Wouldn't surprise me if he got limited minutes for the rest of the season and went back home.

I wonder what kind of roster money is Pareja receiving? He's told me his heart is still in it, but...

I really hope we can get Eddie into full contract status. It will be a vote for the future of his Burn tenure. I'd rather not be worried about him going elsewhere.

Is it possible we could lose Nhleko because of his SI salary? Nothing's been written in Jordan, so he may not even get the chance to prove himself over the longrun by having the benefit of a EJ/Toni/Curtis lineup...

One thing is for-sure though; and that's that Ronnie will be offered a solid contract. If the Burn do anything right in the off-season, it will be making an all-out effort at keeping ROB in Red 'n Black.

I certainly hope he stays, cause there isn't enough Guinness in the whole world that could wash away my grief if he isn't Burn next season.

I am not real sure what he will do. He certainly is having off-field issues. If you listen to gossip you have to believe he won't be back. He is not the kind of fellow who likes to talk about such things so it's almost impossible to know.

Not as much $ as you would think. I do not know exact numbers, but I am believe it is under 100K.

Forget that, I would rather have the free roster spot. Like Joselito he should have one more season on his origional deal. Almost every players signs a 4 year deal coming out. And being P-40 has nothing to do with how much money you make.

You will see that front three in SJ if that helps. And yes there is a chance. Toni gets paid a lot. He needs to score. Period. End of story. Clarke likes him, but even he said he needs to score. With new GM and MAYBE? a new coach you never know.

It's complicated. Who exactly can Ronnie talk to about it. Swift? He has three weeks to go. New GM? He won't even be here till Oct. Clarke? No guarentee he will be here past end of season. And you better believe Ronnie is not excited about playing at Southlake again.

Hypothetically, I wouldn't have any problem using both SIs on centerbacks if you are getting good play out of them as we did last year. A quick look at the national team shows you how shallow the talent pool is in central defense.

We need help in central midfield, desperately. Even Jeffries recognized that. If we bring an SI, it has to be at that spot.
