Here we have a list of all our world cup scorers from 1930-2006.

Not only has Pauleta surpassed the likes of Eusebio he's dwarfed players like Rui Costa, Figo and Nuno Gomes - all players who enjoy more popularity than our Pauleta.

There can be no doubt which player has contributed most to Portugal's World Cup aspirations...his name is Pauleta!

I think it's high time we fellow Portuguese show some respect and acknowledge Pauleta's contribution to the national team.

Just because he was never a Benfica, Porto or Sporting player doesn't mean he doesn't deserve our respect.

We're talking about World Cups not the European Championship.

Eusebio, Figo, Rui Costa and Nuno Gomes also played against very weak teams and couldn't score.

Pauleta has contributed more. He has scored more in World Cup qualifiers helping Portugal reach the finals of two world cups (2002 and 2006).

In all his so called greatness, Eusebio only helped us reach one single world cup (1966).

buddy, I don't know about you but Pauleta has only scored 3 goals in World Cup play. World Cup qualifying doesn't exactly count as Eusebio never had the chance to play 14 odd games in qualifying against teams like Liechtenstein or Andorra are their associations didn't exist back in his day.

Please...I wouldn't even want Pauleta to shine the boots of Eusebio, a true big game player.

While there is no doubt that Pauleta has been an important component of the NT, he is only a component...portugal's success does not depend on him, after all we made it to the finals of Euro without a goal from him and would still have qualified for the WC without his goals (most of which came against the bottom dwellers of our group).

Add a column for games played, he's played far more games and recorded 22 goals.

This is a world cup thread not a club or Euro thread so why bring it up?

Because you made another thread trying to proclaim Pauleta as better than others.

You easily could've used this to push your agenda in your original Pauleta thread or in the actual Pauleta thread.

We shouldn't be opening threads just to talk about statistics, and that doesn't go to just you but other people who are guilty of it as well.

1). Eusebio also took Portugal to a 3rd place finish in 66. What position did Portugal finish in 2002 with Pauleta ?

2). Why do you continue to make comparisons between strikers and midfielders solely on total # of goals scored? It really is absurd

Come Benfica fans, we now have something many of you dread -

    transparency!

It's now clear to see the true facts of player contribution in World Cups.

Portugal qualify four times for world cups

Twice when was harder to qualify only 16 played in the finals
when they increase to 32 countries they made it easy for Portugal to qualify, also the the ex Soviet Union countries, are competing, somethind didn't happen before 1990

its no only Benfica, its Sporting and Porto

by the way in 1966, most of our defence was from Sporting, and two starters from Belenenses, goalkeeper Jose Pereira and central defender Vicente.

All I'm hearing is the same "let's compare everyone to Eusebio and stuff the rest."

How about comparing Pauleta to Figo? How about comparing Pauleta to Rui Costa or Nuno Gomes or Futre?

Rankings don't just start at number 1 and end at number 1. Which were 2nd, 3rd......10th?

he couldn't even shine the shoes of Figo, Rui Costa, Futre and a big game I rather have Nuno Gomes, he had everthing to shine in the Euro 04 and he was lousy, and in the final against Greece was terrible.

comparing pauleta to figo is like comparing apples to oranges.

luis figo will be a legend in my books but eusebio comes first....no ifs or buts.

i wanna comment on that....it seems as if though everyone hates Pauleta because he cant score YET you say why make comparisons between players purly on goals but i thought thats why everyone judges Pauleta on?face it Pauleta is a great player,so what he doesnt "show up"in"big" games neither does Theirry Henry.Yet everyone claims him to be the best striker in the world....but why?

Now im not comparing the 2 im only saying that its pretty much the same thing but people dont give him credit because hes Acoriano,A LOT of people believe that people hate him because hes from Azores and not a mainlander

granted people will say"well Eusebio isnt from the main land"but that isnt the case Eusebio is a LEGEND,somethign Pauleta wont surpass. He himself believes hes not greater hell no one will be greater then Eusebio so stop hating Pauleta because you're scared of him being better then Eusebio.

And since when are World Cup qualifiers not big?nor important?morons,it is important and its always a big game,if it wasnt for him and his goals against"weak"teams we wouldnt have qualified for the World Cup....thank you

also Eusebio is retired,Pauleta will be going strong until hes in his late 40's with his form

All people are doing is bringing up what suits them while ignoring the facts and that's why there's no real consistency in ranking Portuguese players in world cup performances.

Here we have a thread about world cup performances and some people can't stop mentioning European performances.

Yet where was Eusebio in the 1970 World Cup? He didn't turn up either but no one seems to mention these facts either.

Where was Eusebio during the 1974 World Cup? Ohhh sorry this would be too consistent and logical...can't have that.

People mention Pauleta only socred 3 goals in World Cup finals but how many has Nuno Gomes scored?...zero How many has Figo scored?...zero.

guess what? in those days we didn't play with the countries we play at this moment

I think you guys are making at Azores against the rest of Portugal, and shouldn't be the case.
