Penn State 3 - Northwestern 1 Penn State defeated Northwestern 3-1 on a very cold night in Happy Valley. The Nittany Lions took the lead early in the first half when Brian Devlin buried a shot from the left side of the box, Simon Omekanda and Joe Zewe assisted on the goal. Northwestern equalized in the closing minutes of the first half, when they won a corner kick scramble. The goal came against the run of play, a Wildcat counter-attack produced the corner kick, and Northwestern never really threatened until then. Penn State put the game away with two goals in quick succession fairly early on in the second half. David Walters scored on a great, low free kick from about 24 yards out. Brian Devlin then scored his second of the night when he chipped the keeper from the top of the box, Devlin's shot clipped the underside of the cross bar, great touch. I think I remember hearing that PSU outshot NU 9-3, the Nittany Lions certainly seemed to cruise tonight. A few other observations/notes: *Penn State will host Wisconsin on Sunday afternoon. The Nittany Lions are now 6-3 overall and 1-0 in the Big Ten. *Chad Severs did play tonight. He injured his ankle against Akron and re-injured it in the match against Indiana. He hobbled a lot out there, I have no idea why Barry Gorman played him at all. PSU has never lost to Northwestern, why not rest him? He was not effective and seemed in pain. Rest him! *Penn State will play at Indiana on November 8. Their match last Friday was cancelled with IU leading 2-0 because of severe weather. *Penn State's midfield of Devlin, Walters, and freshman Jeff Chambers is fun to watch. They are so skillful and pass beautifully, plus they're so young. Good stuff from this trio. *Simon Omekanda is a diva. He's so fast and skillful, but he wants the ball all the time and barks at teammates when he doesn't get it. When he does pass, he does so wonderfully, but he's more accustomed to being the man. He has great qualities in a striker, but definitely an emotional player.
