There are more jobs and the league levels in Europe and the big plus is that these leagues/tier are interconnected to a greater degree than MLS and USL. So, you can start in a 3rd Division, if you're not good enough for the 2nd, adjust, improve and then go up. The US system seems a lot more disjointed and haphazard.
Right, but I would reckon a lot of college players could play at those levels. And Charlie isn't starting at that level.
No, that's not what I am saying. What I am saying is that in the past MLS could entice players to take their busboy wages by providing a very high likelyhood of getting PT. As there is more competition for MLS playing time, that piece of the equation becomes less important. Do you forgo 400 k in Holland or 200 k in Belgium if you have the same chance of sitting in either league? It's not quite equal yet. You still have a better chance of getting MLS playing time than Ered, but it will continue to get tighter.
You're right,of course-it's just the concept of some "guarantee" of PT at any level that makes my skin crawl.
more to the point with MLS, do you forgo 60k a year to play reserves or with a small club in northern europe to rake in $16k a year for a similar situ in MLS, even if you are going to play. Not whinging about MLS, they have a model and it is working. But the footie market is global, and you really, really can't blame anyone for taking the path of living wage.
Yes but that's precisely the beauty of those leagues ... playing in reserves for a Bundesliga II squad is like a 4th level but, if you get noticed and promoted, then you're up two levels within a year. The key there is hard work, ahleticism and aptitude. BTW, I was watching the GB Packers head coach Mike McCarthy's interview a couple of days ago (Mike's a smart guy, has a master's degree, top pedigree as an offensive coordinator with the Saints) and someone asked him about the talent on the team and he said, "We're not in the talent business. We're in a character business. After all, what is talent? Is that a 40-yard dash time? Well, we know that it's not that. It's character. It's how you apply yourself." And I immediately thought that that many a personnel director/general manager would quibble with that statement ... but the more I think about it, especially in light of Charlie's season in Sweden, the more I think that Mike has made a very good point. Hammarby is roughly on the TSV 1860 level (a competitive squad in Sweden's top league has to be close to the top squad in Bundesliga II) and Josh Wolff had to fight for time there last season. And Josh is a 30 year old, who has some 50 caps for the US. College-to-the-Euros is not an easy transition to make, especially at a creative position.
Yeah, it's not something to get really excited about, I guess. But I've got to say that it was nice reading about the goal (they played up in Gävle so I haven't seen it), that he scored with a "distinct finish" as hammarbyfotboll.se puts it. Since that's been a big problem for him, it feels good knowing that maybe he's improving.
Unless you're scoring drugs or into an own goal, I think its pretty much always better to score than not to score.
Sure, but the reality was, in MLS for many years, the rosters were thin enough at 9 to 14 that a young player with decent chops could pretty much figure on getting PT rather quickly. Every roster had a few very replaceable players. And if a kid had USMNT hopes it was a fairly decent argument that playing in MLS was better than fighting to get time in the B1. As team depth grows those "walk into spots" are getting fewer and farther between. And I'd guess players are going to be less likely to accept lower wages if they might have to play a season of mostly reserve ball in either place.
MLS is experiencing a double squeeze for roster spots - one the one hand, it keeps importing better and better foreign players; on the other, both the quantity and the quality of the American kids has gone up too. Add to that the fact that long-time fer'ners get green cards and no longer count against the non-US player limits and breaking into starting rotations becomes pretty hard. Unless you're Galaxy, that is, and have traded most of your quality away.
Well the reason why CD played with the reserves right now is just to get playing time while the league is on hold I guess. This due to European Championship qualifications this last week. New game tomorrow at 4 p.m. CET. With wishes of a nice weekend to all readers! //O.
Thanks, Obese Hammarby v Gefle is listed as 'maybe' right now on myp2p.eu for p2p coverage. The game starts at 10:00 EST. Lets cross our fingers.
Hammarby back on track, here we come Portugal after 4-3 win over gefle with CD mohawk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQ7-3P2nInY Forza Bajen/CD
CD played last 10min, did it very well if you can do it in 10 min Forzza CD Paholino is out next game after he show hes jesus t-shirt after scoring, CD should start next game.
Davies should come back to MLS and try to salvage his career while he still can. Along with Nguyen & Hill.
10 minutes or 10 seconds, we know CD can perform well - he's a young guy, after all - but did he score? If CD does start the next game, should he dedicate his performance to Jesus? Or would that result in a 3-game suspension?
