In Conn. they are using a new recert process - you take a 50 question test online, and then (if you pass) you take the 3 hour recert course. If you fail, you go to remedial school. I am not sure if this will be rolled out elsewhere.

I would think that this could make it more difficult for those referees without a firm grasp of the rules, in the old days the instructors might help them make the passing grade with a few suggestions as to answers they needed to review. Imagine, a day when all referees know 65% of the answers to the test. (Actually, given that you can guess, you can pass if you know the answers to about 50% of the questions).

On the other hand, I do not see how online tests will prevent substitute test takers or personal advisors, so maybe this will not eliminate the most ignorant referees.

Are you talking High School or USSF? Our high school league is planning something similar.

This is USSF and is statewide.

I'm glad someone told me about it. Unless this is just for Grade 8s? I know the fitness test and clinic are at different times, but I didn't know about this. When did you find this out?

One of the purposes of the recert is to educate (edumacate if you are Homer J) The online test is in practice an "open book" test. In order to "pass" the referee can look up the answer. This is OK as the process educates the referee who does not know the answer.

I wonder how many referees they have in Conn? In NJ we have about 3500 or so...even if 10% fail (which is optimistic) we would have to arrange remdial classes for 350 referees!! The logisitics ar difficult!

Addtionally and importantly, here in NJ, recerts have been happening for only the last 4 yrs or so, prior to that there was NO recertification process! Yes that is true and a fact.

There was another thread on this board that trashed some who are administrating referees in NJ....but those are the folks who started the recert program here.

How can they police whether or not people are using the LOTG and other aids when they are taking a test online? Really, if someone can't pass an online test with all the materials available, probably shouldn't be reffing.
