Sometime in the spring I saw a print ad for a cd collaboration of a prominent English pianist and several contemporary masters of the sitar/traditional Indian music. Does anyone know the name of the recording or is anyone familiar with it? Thanks.
The first poster to spring to mind as someone who might know this: Nicodemus. Thusly I advise thee: Go, seek ye among the final posts of yon "So...what are you reading?" thread within this very forum, forsooth. Of a certainty, thou wilt find Nicodemus therein and perchance he will slake thy thirst for knowledge.
Man, that is pretty vague. I'm not sure. What magazine did you see the ad in? Also, one caveat about Indian music performers, they almost all refer to themselves as "masters" or as the "foremost players of their generation." Not saying that a lot of them aren't, but many westerners don't have the first clue and will believe it just because it is written. For some reason many people are more "wowed" by eastern musicians than they are by the western counterparts. Having worked closely with both eastern & western performers, there are many things to be in awe of about both of them. Not only that, but I've seen sitar players blown away seeing an orchestra perform live for the first time and I've seen classical musicians amazed by the eastern improv ability. I for one, tend to abhor most "world music fusion" albums because they are just diluting two different traditions and accomplishing very little. One notable exception is the Indo-Persian fusion group Ghazal. Their "As Night Falls on the Silk Road" album is particularly fantastic. All that being said, if you can find any more info about it, I can probably at least point you in the right direction.
Re: Re: Need Indian Sitar Info That Ghazal album is amazing. You know they're touring the US soon, right? The ECM site has the dates. http://www.ecmrecords.com/ecm-cgi-bin/ustours
Re: Re: Re: Need Indian Sitar Info I've seen them twice. Once in North Carolina, and then I promoted a show by them here. We had a sold out house here. It was awesome.
