Società Sportiva Lazio S.p.A. 2-0 Besiktas Jimnastik Kulübü

Two goals per half by defender Jaap Stam and midfielder Stefano Fiore respectively allowed Lazio to collect a pivotal 2-0 away win over Besiktas in the opening match of the qualifying Group G.

However, the match was much more balanced than the final score implies. The hosts played a good match, and Lazio prevailed mostly thanks to their experience and great tactical accuracy.

In the first 30 minutes, Besiktas put more pressure while Lazio tried to find spaces for their lethal counterattack.

However, neither team managed to create anything important in front of the opponents' net, apart from a couple of shots by Fiore for Lazio and Giunti for Besiktas.

The guests took the lead in the 36th minute with Dutch giant Jaap Stam, who took profit of a corner kick and netted with a fine header.

Besiktas reacted promptly and two minutes later Peruzzi was forced to make a great save on a free kick by Yldirim.

The hosts put a big pressure on Lazio throughout the whole second half, but the Biancocelesti defended their lead with determination.

In the last part of the match, Lucescu's men increased their pressure and went close to the equalizer at least twice: in the 65th minute Peruzzi made another very good save on a left-footer by Sergen, while ten minutes later Sinan hit the bar with a shot from the edge of the box.

Moments later, Besiktas' efforts were frustrated by Fiore, who netted the 2-0 courtesy of a big defensive mistake by defender Ronaldo.

The reigning Turkish champions didn't have the time to react and Lazio could celebrate their fifth victory in as many official matches.

On the other hand, this game marks the first defeat of the season for Besiktas, who own a perfect 5-0-0 record in their domestic league.
