    ISP Exclusive: FC Bayern analysis

Iran Sports Press - Bayern Munich is one of the biggest and greatest clubs in today's football. A few days ago the club reached 100 000 members.
    Mahbod Z & Naveed Moula

It is an honour or better to say a dream for many footballers to play for the Bavarian giant. Any new player who will have his dream fulfilled with a contract will not have an easy task ahead of himself to get into the starting line-up. FC Bayern have had a lot of success during the years in European football, just have a look at his these titles which the club has won.

    1) German Bundesliga: 19 times since 1932
    2) German Cup: 12 times since 1957
    3) European Champions League : 1974,1975,1976, 2001
    4) UEFA Cup: 1996
    5) International World Club champions: 1976, 2001

FC Bayern has the world's most competitive and strongest midfield. Although Juventus has midfielders like Nedved, Emerson, Camoranesi and maybe also Patrick Viera still they come nowhere the strength in depth of the Bayern midfield. Real Madrid has midfielders like Zidane, Beckham, Gravesen, Figo and Guti while Chelsea can be proud to have Lampard, Cole, Duff, Robben and Makelele in their midfield. AC Milan also have a midfield full of stars (Gattuso, Kaka, Pirlo, Seedorf, Serginho, Rui Costa) however none of these teams can reach the competitive midfield of FC Bayern. ISP's Mahbod Z and Naveed Moula have taken a look at the world's strongest midfield:

    Defensive midfield:

    Martin Demichelis

Date of birth: 20 December 1980
    Bundesliga games: 37
    Website: No official

Demichelis is the first Argentine to ever play for FC Bayern and to win a German Bundesliga title. Recently he was also called up to the national team for the first time as he joined the others for the Confederations Cup. Demechlis told the media that he is dying to play for Argentina, even if only for a few minutes but it wasn't to happen as he followed all the matches from the bench. Before Bayern snapped him up Demichelis won two league titles with River Plate. Demechelis last season mostly played as defensive midfielder for Bayern although he is as strong in central defence. With the new signing of central defender Valérien Ismael Demichelis is likely to appear in defensive midfield for another season.

    Nationality: Argentinean
    International caps: 0

    Owen Hargreaves

Date of birth: January 20 1981
    Bundesliga games: 120
    Website: http://www.owenhargreaves.de/

Hargreaves is born in 1981 in Calgary, Canada. A gifted midfielder and an accomplished passer with a good eye for goal scoring opportunities. Owen is the perfect role model for any others talents outside Europe who want to follow professional career's. Part of Bayern's Organization since 1997 because of his move to Germany at the age of 15. Due to his heritage Owen was eligible to play for England, Canada or the Welsh national team. He though chose to play for his father native land, England. He quickly graduated from England Under 21 to the senior team in 2001, making his debut in a friendly against Holland. Initially appearing on the left wing, Hargreaves can play all over midfield but also as right back. Though it's most likely that Hargreaves will be a substitute for Demichelis and play whenever he's not playing and vice versa. However if Demichelis will be used in central midfield Hargreaves can look forward to more time on the pitch and less on the bench.

    Career record and titles won:
    Nationality: English
    International caps: 26
    International goals: 0
    Euro participations: 2004
    World Cup participations: 2002

    German Cups: 2003, 2005
    Champions League: 2001
    Continental Cup: 2001

    Jens Jeremies

Date of birth: March 5 1974
    Bundesliga games: 238
    Website: No official

The 31 year old combative defensive midfielder was one of the most regular German national team players during the years. He is an industrious midfielder who can read the game very well and can quickly turn defence to attack. Jeremies a former German international started his professional football with Dynamo Dresden and later joined 1860 Munich in the Bundesliga. Victim of injury "Jerry" retired from international competitions to focus more on his club. In the end of last season he was linked to several clubs but decided to stay in Bayern Munich until the end of his contract by next year. Jeremies will probably be the defensive midfielder that will get the least amount of playing time.

    Sebastian Deisler

Deisler is an accurate passer and excellent crosser with his right foot. He was victim of depression and a serious knee injury, which ruled him out of World cup 2002, Euro 2004 and a starting place in Bayern’s line up. With a great performance in Confederations Cup recently, Deisler now seems ready to become an important player for Germany in home World Cup and also for Bayern this coming season.

    Bastian Schweinsteiger

Bastian is one of the great German players of the new young generation. Schweinsteiger is born in 1984 in Kolbermoor. He is a tireless worker and attacking young star who creates space and intelligently distributes the ball. Schweinsteiger joined FC Bayern München as a junior and went on to rise through the club's youth sides. Having won the German youth championship in July 2002, Schweinsteiger quickly earned a place in the reserves, producing a string of solid displays in the third division to attract the attention of the senior coaching staff. After just two training sessions with the first team, coach Ottmar Hitzfeld gave Schweinsteiger his debut as a late substitute in a UEFA Champions League game against RC Lens in November 2002, and the youngster made an immediate impact. He is considered as a key player by both Bayern coach, Felix Magath and German national team coach, Jurgen Klinsmann.

    Hasan Salihamidzic

Date of birth: January 1 1977
    Bundesliga games: 256
    Website: No official

The hard working midfielder joined Bayern from Hamburg. The 28 year old Bosnian star has been a regular player since 1998 and could figure himself in both Hitzfeld and Magath's plans.A blend of immaculate defensive and offensive abilities have made Salihamidzic, an integral figure for both club and country.

Nick named "Brazzo" by his fans always give his 100% in every game and is well respected by his team mates because of his positive attitude. After two serious injuries in 2002 and 2003, he had great come back and could appear in 33 Bundesliga games last season. Salihamidzic played a lot of games in the back four last season, and as the competition in midfield is fierce Magath may very well move down Hasan to defense (right/left) again.

    Career record and titles won:
    Nationality: Bosnian
    International caps: 46
    International goals: 19
    German Bundesliga: 1999, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2005

    Central and offensive midfield:

    Mehmet Scholl

Date of Birth: October 16 1970
    Bundesliga games: 360
    Website: No official

Veteran midfielder Scholl is the longest serving player of his club and will this year play his 14th season for Bayern having already played 421 competitive matches and scored 111 goals. Scholl was born in Karlsruhe, son of Hella and Ergin Yüksel, a German mother and a Turkish immigrant father. At the age of five, his father left the family and returned to Turkey. Later his mother married Hermann Scholl and Mehmet acquired his stepfather's last name.

Scholl is one of the German Bundesliga's most successful players, winning the championship a record seven times (only Klaus Augenthaler, Lothar Matthäus and Alexander Zickler have won as many Bundesliga titles).

Former German player of the year and international has played a key role for his side during the years and has been one of the best midfielders not only for his club but also for Germany. Scholl was indeed the victim of several injuries during his career, which gave him the supporting role later in his club and forced him to retire from the German national team before World Cup 2002. That meant Scholl never had the chance to take part in any World Cup.

    Career Record and titles won:

    International caps: 36
    International goals: 8
    Euro participations: 2000

    Michael Ballack:

Date of Birth: September 26 1976

    Website: http://www.michael-ballack.com

Probably the best German player and one of the best midfielders in the world, born in 1976 in Gorlitz in Germany. He started his professional football career in bundesliga with FC Kaiserslautern and joined Bayern Munich in 02/03 season from Bayern Leverkusen. He was beside Ze Reboerto the main reason why Leverkusen reached the final of CL in 01/02 season. Ballack can play as offensive as well as central midfielder and has the ability to play with both feet.
Ballack always scores many goals and is one of the key players for the coach Felix Magath. Ace midfielder was criticized by German media for being inconsistent in the German national team but still is considered by Germany's national team coach Jurgen Klinsmann as his team’s leader and capitan. His great performance in the World Cup was enough to lead his country to the final and after receiving his second yellow card in the tournament against South Korea, he missed the final against Brazil.

    Ali Karimi

Date of Birth: November 8 1978
Bundesliga games: 2005/06 is his debut season
    Website: http://www.alikarimi8.com

Ali Karimi, "Asian Maradona" is the newest addition to the FC Bayern midfield. The reigning Asian player of the year was also the best player during last years Asian Cup with five goals and two assists but was robbed the MVP title by the AFC technical comitee. Karimi will be the third Iranian to play for the Bavarians in just a few seasons. He will be heavily pressured to perform otherwise his spell at Bayern will probably end after only one season having in mind the new rules limiting the number of non EU players to only 3 for next season. Ali Karimi won both the league and the Presidents Cup with Al Ahli as well as he has won the goalscoring boot and been chosen as the best player and best foreigner of the UAE League. Before Karimi moved to UAE he won both the league and the Cup title with Perspolis in Iran. Ali Karimi will be used in central/offensive midfield but can also be used as a striker.

    Summary

Anything can happen, anything is possible, at least on the Bayern midfield. If we don't include rising star Andreas Ottl ten players are fighting for four places on the Bayern midfield. If we give one place to Michael Ballack, nine players remains for three places. If we give another place to Demichelis/Hargreaves seven players remain for tiny two places. The german magazine Kicker in an article this week suggested what we just went through, it remains to be seen how Magath will field his team but one thing is certain, Magath has many stars to choose from...
