For those of us who like to travel and try out new courses, let's put up a thread of our favorites. It could be a "home" course in your area, or a place you went to on vacation. Make sure it is at least semi-public though, since people may want to check it out. My favorites: 1) Sugarloaf Golf Resort, Maine http://www.golfcourse.com/search/co...=GA&start=1&count=10&sort=clubname&usstate=ME I was way overmatched when I played there, but had a blast anyway. Beautiful, difficult, and very hilly. 2) Raspberry Falls, Virginia http://www.golfcourse.com/search/co...A&start=261&count=10&sort=clubname&usstate=VA Also pricey and challenging. Greens were like glass, IIR. 3) Wachesaw East, SC http://www.golfcourse.com/search/co...=GA&start=1&count=10&sort=clubname&usstate=SC Nice course...great carts! They had the computers with "distance to pin" gauges on screen. Also had a menu and intercom to clubhouse so you could order lunch before making the turn...pick it up on the way. Naturally, I almost never play places like these, so they kind of stand out. I tend more towards the $25 per round courses, and even then, I don't get out as much as I'd like. I'm playing a place in RI next week that is supposed to be very nice: Montaup CC in Portsmouth, right on the Bay.
Lets see. If you get up near Greensboro, NC, two great courses stand out in mind. The Players at Bryan Park and Stoney Creek over in Mebane. Both have been used as Monday qualifing for the GGCC. Most any course in Mrytle Beach is great. I have played two that I thought were not worthy of the money were Wicked Stick the John Daly designed course and Mrytle Beach National, I beleive it is the new Palmer course down there. Neither were worth the trip nor the money. If you are down for a weekend, play the Legends courses. All of them look great. Played Heather Glen or something like that once. Awesome.
Totally agree! I played that the day before Wachesaw, and it was highly mediocre. Not at all what you are looking for in a round at the golf Mecca of the world.
I was just out in Rhode Island and went to a nephew's wedding. Guess where they held the reception? I didn't think it would be appropriate to break out the sticks, though. I haven't played in 7 or 8 years, but here are my favorites: there's a decent public course in Arlington Height's, Illinois. It was the first course I ever played on where the fairway was manicured so well that the ball sat up, which really improved my long iron and fairway wood play. I like the course largely because it was the first time I ever broke 90 (shot an 86)... what's really amazing is that it was also the first time I ever broke 100, too. Cog Hill, #4, before it became the Western Open course. Obviously, I'm not very good. If I ever play a course with over 100 sand traps again, I'll make sure I rent a camel. Played it two days after the one in Arlington Heights, and carded a 91. Went back to my "home course" (called "Bunker Links" even though there are only 5 sand traps and... well, it's in Galesburg, Illinois, so it can't be a links course) and eventually maintained a respectable level of suckitude until the sport got too expensive to play where I was living..
Haven't played at all in the past 2 years or so, but finally got some time in the past month to get out 3 times. Played a great little course yesterday called Ottawa Park in Toledo. It's the oldest course in the country off the eastern seaboard, and I think it's one of the oldest municipal courses. Opened in 1908. Lots of very neat and tricky holes, though it's VERY short. I'd say the average par 4 is about 295-310 yards. But there's lots of water and sand and elevation and trees, so it's target golf. Unbelievable value at $22 to ride 18 holes. (And I shot an 89, which is pretty good for where my game is at right now)
Shaker Run in Ohio were they are playing the USGA Am. links this week. I played back in 92 w/ my High School when it still was a company course.
"golf is a good walk spoiled." i don't get the appeal. maybe my gen x brain needs an adrenaline rush on weekends. i dunno. what do you guys like about golf?
My favorite would probably have to be Half Moon Bay which I played around 5 years ago. It's located in California right beside the Pacific Ocean and it's just beautiful.
i have played. my biggest complaint is the amount of time it takes to play 18 holes. it's borderline painful.
In the NY area, agreed. I had many 6 hour rounds when I lived down there. Upstate NY however, I have had many 3.5 - 4hr rounds. Also you need to dedicate the time to play otherwise it will frustrate the hell out of you. Alas, that is why I haven't played in 3 years. As for best courses played: Oak Hill (East Course), Rochester - site of US Opens, PGA's & '95 Ryder Cup. Let's just say its a different world when one steps up to one of these courses. Amazing experience every time I played it. In Myrtle, I agree Legends ( I played Heathland) is a fun place, if for anything else just to stand in a pot bunker. Nickalaus' Long Bay was sort of cool, but very short.
Green Meadows Golf Course-Volant, PA It's definitly off the beaten path, but it's a wonderful golf course. Fast greens, wide fairways, and the price is right. It's about an hour north of Pittsburgh, right off of RT. 19.
