The Danish fan who attacked a referee during a European Championship qualifier between Sweden and Denmark will be sued for 1.9 million kroner (€255,130; US$350,000), the Danish soccer federation said Friday.

The man, who cannot be named under a court order, stormed the pitch on June 2 and started to attack German referee Herbert Fandel for sending off a Danish player and giving a penalty to Sweden.

    ....

The 29-year-old man ran onto the pitch moments after Fandel had given a red card to Christian Poulsen for punching Swedish striker Markus Rosenberg in the stomach in the final minutes of the game.

The man was able to get a hand to Fandel's neck before being restrained by Danish players. He has since apologized for the attack.

Fandel abandoned the Group F match with the score level at 3-3 after the attack. UEFA eventually awarded Sweden a 3-0 victory.

    ....

Well that's one way to make a point. I doubt they'll ever actually recoup that money from him but no doubt he's liable for a great deal of lost revenue and other damages as a result of his action. Of course here in the US they'd probably rule that he's not liable because the venue should have restrained him (god forbid someone be held accountable for their own actions).

didn't the federation's lax security contribute to the situation? wouldn't they be guilty of contributory negligence?

OMG please tell me you just pulling my chain here. This is exactly what I'm talking about. No the level of security played no part, the man's idiocy and choice to rush the field is 100% of the cause. See this is the crap I'm talking about, in US law there's always someone to blame for not stopping you from doing something stupid. This guy was an adult, who knows right from wrong, and he did something idiotic. He's 100% at fault, no one else contributed to him being a moron (except perhaps his parents when they dropped him on his head).
