Pellerud & Reddick On "Inside Soccer" 10-18-03

I just received confirmation from Brian Halliday of "Inside Soccer" that the Head Coach of the Canadian Women's National Team, Even Pellerud, will be the first guest on "Inside Soccer" today shortly after 3 PM San Diego time (6 PM ET). Pellerud's Canadian team just finished fourth in the recently completely WC. Pellerud also coached the Norwegian Women's Team that won the 1995 WC making him the only coach in women's soccer to take two different national teams to the final weekend of a WWC.

USWNT defender Catherine "Please Don't Call me CAT" Reddick is also scheduled to be a guest on "Inside Soccer" during the last hour of today's show shortly after 5 PM PT (8PM ET).

Here's the direct link for listening to the "Inside Soccer" show along with the phone numbers if anyone has a question for Coach Pellerud or Catherine Reddick:

    Interview With Coach Pellerud

Coach Pellerud gave an excellent interview this afternoon and was on the "Inside Soccer" show for a good 20-25 minutes. If anyone is interested I'll post the link to this segment of the show when it becomes available in a day or two.

    SV: Interview With Coach Pellerud

Sorry to hear that you missed the interview because it was a good one. I really enjoyed hearing about Pellerud's "fotball" background and how he started playing when he was a small boy and used to take a soccer ball to bed with him and use it as a pillow when he was just five years old. :)

Pellerud played professionally in Norway and when he took the job as the coach of the Norwegian Women's National Team in 1989, he hadn't even seen a women's match before. Pellerud coached the Norwegian WNT from '89 - '96 and Norway won silver at the '91 WC, won the '93 European Championships, won the '95 WWC, and won bronze at the '96 Atlanta Olympics.

Coach Pellerud naturally had a lot to say about the 2003 WC and Canada's program (he has been the head coach of Canada's WNT since after the '99 WC). Pellerud mentioned that Heinrichs was using the loss of Chastain as one of her excuses for not winning the WC, but Pellerud pointed out that Canada still did well even though they had lost six defenders from their pool of WC players. To me the fact that Canada did as well as they did despite losing so many defenders was one of the most amazing accomplishments by any team in this WC.

    interesting summary...

as to USA...I'd say the loss of Macmillian had far more impact than the loss of chastain....

reddick played about as well as chastain does...

with NO mac...the style attacker she represents simply wasn't available and I believe the lack in variation of attacker ended up hurting usa far more than the loss of brandi...

the point about never having seen the norwegians play before is interesting...

    soccer is soccer...

I do suspect the handling pf psyches is an acquired taste though...

    lolz!

i agree! can't wait until the olympics when HOPEFULLY canada has at least one real defender who isn't playing injured....
this should do well for canada's next u19 team. Having kara lang, brittany timko, and tanya dennis who all started every game at the WC.

she always makes excuses. She needs to learn how to accept a loss.

I think she's right, w/ Brandi out there the back line would've been more organized, there wouldn't be a goal for Canada and this is for real not an excuse...Pellerud made excuses for not having 6 deffenders w/ him during the WC

The way I see it Brandi's very beatable these days(see '03 WUSA All Star Game). Canada might have scored more goals with her on the back line.

On the other hand Canada would have definitely been much stronger with Chapman, Boyd and Nonen playing and healthy. Canada would have been in the gold medal match and the Canada/US game wouldn't have happened.

I hope Pellerud will realize after this WC that to play soccer is far more important than Norwegian wrestling and Hooper should play wrestling instead of soccer...

im sorry, but what's worse....losing one defender, or losing all your defenders plus a forward that had to play D? The US lost to germany 3-0, there is NO WAY she would have made up for 3 goals!

Germany lost Steffi Jones, who filled a similar role for Germany that Chastain did for the US so it's a wash. If April really used that as an excuse, Pellerud was right to call her on it.

....an old wrestler who don't know how to be a defender, all goals came from her stupid faults, all three US goals because of her faults and one German's penalty was because she touched the ball deliberately (during the opening game)

Naw. Sweden came within 11 minutes of losing to Canada as it was. Canada's starting back line wouldn't have been caught napping on Sweden's fast re-start. Hooper would would have played as a forward. A healthy Canadian side would have won that game going away. 2-0 or 3-0 for Canada.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: SV: Interview With Coach Pellerud

Steffi Jones has most of the time played in defense (inner defense) for Germany. They only tried to play her in def midfield in the first Wc game (probably because she played that role in Washington) but it didn't work out. So in the next two WC games she started in defense.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: SV: Interview With Coach Pellerud

Wouldn't think that it would have been such a clear win. Maybe not not even a win. IF Canada would have been able to play another defense, maybe Sweden would have another offensive approach. Maybe they would have been extremely successfull against one certain defender because they found out a mistake. But we'll never know...

uhhhh buddy.....i wasn't talkin about hooper eh?! notice she never got injured! I was talking about Tanya Dennis who was a u19 forward brought up to play D at the WC then got a concussion before the US game.

true. It all depends how you flip the cards.

....... the unability to catch Sweden's fast re-start that produced an equalizer for Sweden, was because of inexperience of the Canadian players, the same thing with Milbrett's goal during the 3rd place match which came from the fast re-start, i think next time Canada should aware of that
