The worst defense in MLS and the A League held them to nil, at least until matchtracker gave out. Nhelko sat while Rhine played. O'brien played a few minutes too.

one more to go, and it's all a memory.

Metrostars are not good when you cannot poke one in with two PK's against the worst defense in pro soccer.

I can hear the pathetic excuses now...

Makes me wonder if Clarke anticipates Rhine being 'looked at' by other teams in the off-season. Maybe it would've upped his stock if he put one in.

Still would like to hold on to Nhleko tho.

It was nice to see Benhcke's height factoring in at the top of the six box too. I'm not enthused about Dunseth playing for the Burn. I think Brian would've gotten toasted on the same play if he were trying to go up for that header.

Gbandi looks slow. On every rush he pushed the ball, he was caught from behind. I just don't see alot of 'threat' in his game. Heck, if we're going to keep Ezra, I'd rather see him as the designated pusher - with a solid, dedicated three at the back.

Was it me, or was Deering quicker with shorter hair?

I was at the game and saw Nhelko walking from the tunnel to the bench. He appeared to be hurt, he even seemed to be in pain just walking. After seeing that, I was suprised that he even made the trip, but I guess we needed players that bad.

It sure was nice to see Ronnie out there. Also great to see DJ back in goal...man, that kid's great. Too bad he was all alone for so much of the season, he would have had much better stats with a decent defense in front of him.

IF WE ONLY COULD'A SUNK THAT PK!!!!! WHY EJ? Someone with experience next time! see my other thread about how FSW didn't even realize any of them were PKs and the lack of replays on all the bogus PK calls (the Metro's)

1st half-shakey, but they calmed down near the end.

2nd half-pushed when needed and bunkered down the rest of the time.

Had a few chances. Good to see ROB on the pitch. DJ was well deserving MoM. In fact he is tied with KC's big fat tony for most pks stoped in a game. Also good to see Urbas get some time. Didn't look too bad. The game itself was very slow and sluggish. Wonder if metro were looking ahead to Weds game against C-town and if they were if bradly told them not to do anything stupid. Ref was actually decent. EJ's pk wasunlucky not to hit inside the post after walker tiped it.

nil-nil, not the best, but it is a point and I'll take it.

You made it to the game, huh? How far is it for you from Jersey?

I hope toni's injury doesn't hurt his chances to make the roster next season. Then again, I don't know if anyone is safe from HSG's axe in the off-season.

The only teams looking at Bobby in the off-season are going to be Charleston, Virginia Beach, Rochester, etc. He impressed today, but I think he's sealed his fate with one goal in 954 minutes.

I've been a big Dunseth supporter since he came here, but this is now two PK's he's given up on clearly intentional handballs. I don't really like cheating, and I especially dislike incompetent cheating. Enough already!

Probably. But I think everyone's too hard on him. He had a great season last season and everyone's given EJ a million second chances, but no since Rhine isn't putting goals in like Ronaldo he'll be shipped off to the A-League, probably never to see a MLS game again. Sad.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Burn vs. Metrostars post game (result)

E.J. has gotten so many more chances because

    1. He is eight (eight!) years younger than Rhine and

    2. He is far, far more talented than Rhine.

Rhine had a solid (great??) season last year, but exactly what MLS team is going to be looking to pick up a 27 year old forward who has managed 1 goal and 1 assist in almost 1000 minutes this year? I'm not saying this is fair, but that's not how a sports league can operate; I'm not particularly happy to say it, but Bobby Rhine is getting paid too much (not a lot, obviously, but several times what a developmental player is paid) to be producing like he is.

Yes it's sad, but there's nothing that can be done about it.

Interestingly enough, if HSG feels that Kreis will draw numbers and they decide to deal with his option, HSG might let go of Nhleko and maybe another 'higher-priced' veteran in order to keep Rhine with Jason.

I still don't believe that Kreis would be happy playing with a much younger, non-servicing, selfish forward. He claims that the team comes first, but I think Jason's 'happiness' comes first to him, and he wants players around him that will always be looking for him.

Well, I guess I can't blame a proven veteran for being uncertain around what could be interpreted as brash, and, therefore, ignorant of what a successful team model consists of... getting it to the guy who puts it in the net. If noone has proven that they can do the same, then maybe the proven commodity should be catered to.

    Damn logic.

Rhine has gotten a lot more chances than EJ. Check out the minutes played for the last three years. He's got many more chances than he deserves.

Contrary to popular belief, Metros actually play in NJ, not NY. It's about an hour ride, which is a small price to play to get to see live soccer a couple of times a month. Due to geographic reasons, I'm a season ticket holder for Metro, but I'm supporting the league (at least that's how I justify it to myself). Of course that sets me up for smack talk at Dallas games when I show up in my Burn shirt & scarf, but screw 'em.

I got to talk briefly to ROB last night...what a class act. He actually thanked me for coming out to the game. I know it's been a *#*#*#*#*#*# season, but he had nothing to do with that. I liked him from the first time he stepped on the pitch for Burn, I just hope he makes it through the off-season ax.

My first question was : Why is EJ taking the penalty kick?

What a sight to see Ronnie O back on the field, If 2004 is going to be any better than 2003 - Ronnie will have a lot to do with it.

Hardly recognized Chad Deeering. And he did play better - the Anti-Sampson effect?

Yeah, Meadowlands, right? Just 'over the bridge' from NY?.. anyway, I know travel is somewhat complicated there because of the way New Jersey is connected to NY and the bridges... an hour is a pain (now I feel kinda spoiled with my 'commute').

It only takes a 'brief moment' in talking to ROB to figure out that he's the epitomy of what an MLS player should be (I LOVE Dema, loooooove hiiiiiiiiim).

NOW I'M GOING TO PRAY EVERYDAY FOR THE WHOLE OFF-SEASON THAT RONNIE O'BRIEN IS FOOLISH ENOUGH TO PLAY AT DRAGON FOR ONE MORE SEASON!!!

The 'roller coaster ride' that is Burn...

    Ugh.

ROB wants to play an my guess and I'm hoping it is right, but ROB will be with the Burn next season.

Kries needs to start thinking which is better, him, his record, or the team. If EJ and Ali start up front and complains, ship him off.

Whoever is in charge needs to field the best POSSIBLE line up, not who has been here the longest, the oldest, etc...

If the Burn were any good at marketing, the would look towards the future and have Brad Davis, EJ, ROB, and DJ be their poster boys.

The really painful part comes in when riding home from the game with a Metro fan after they've beaten Burn (I've done this more times than I care to remember). Fortunately (?) last night wasn't like that...I was actually happy to have tied, at least that meant we didn't lose.

What a truly pathetic season that a tie could make me happy.

Rhine is a decent off the bench, cheap, player. He's never made big money for a forward, that's why a lot of teams are interested in him. He's the ideal backup forward, doesn't complain, not a team cancer. He may end up in the A League, I'm more inclined to say someone in MLS could pick him up. But unless something weird happens, I still think Nhelko and Rhine will be looking for a new gig. And Dunseth can go with them.

Behnke looked like he belonged today. After that game he might actually be here for next year.

And EJ's lack of minutes is not the fault of anything but fate. This is the first year since he joined the Burn that he's BEEN ABLE to play a lot. He had injuries several times, I think he had a relative die, and U-20 duty etc. And comparing them is a little apples and oranges. The style of the team shifted when Kreis got hurt, and that meant Bobby sat. Question is when Kreis comes back...will they play like the three attackers have been, or will they go back to trying to dribble into the goal.

This is the first time Eddie probably feels he's part of the team. I was disappointed Nhelko was not up for the game...I would love to have seen him toss around Jolley and AMBOD on his way to goal.

This guy chokes the chicken more than KFC. Why give him the penalty kick?! I'd rather see Behnke take it. Do you realize that if EJ made half the "give me" goal opportunities he's had this year (lord knows how many open net shots), he'd be leading the team in scoring?!

    Re: EJ

And Eddie admits it in the interviews he gives after the games - "I've got to put those shots away"

At least he owns up to the fact that HE missed it, and is no longer trying to blame others for not making the run, poor crossing, etc.

At least the pain that has been this season is almost over.

    I'm happy for a tie also. It's a point.

    Re: Re: EJ

Yeah, and even with the fantastic save from the keeper, it still almost went in. A very-well struck ball, considering EJ was just guessing...

... hmm... Mathis was 'guessing' too when he tried the cute 'high-middle' shot - thinking DJ would go one-way-or-the-other.

Heh, maybe Behnke should be playing forward for Metros and Mathis should go to the A-League.
