Great call. Polanski, Kieslowski and Wajda are the most famous. But the the past, present, and future of Polish cinema has only ever rested on the shoulders of one great giant: Krzysztof Zanussi.

Zanussi is Pope John Paul II with a camera instead of a god.

I'm resurrecting this thread, not only because it's been cruelly neglected for far too long (blame me), but because I finally saw Jerzy Stuhr's The Big Animal tonight at the Athens Film Festival, and while it's not a film to make you forget all other films, it's a sweet, enjoyable, and thoughtful little film. Back me up here GringoTex - I know you've seen it, as you've seen everything.

I have to admit to being woefully uninformed about PolCin. Other than the big three that get mentioned and the composer Lezek Jankowski (Brothers Quay) I know ******** all.

    Got some titles there GT?

Per nicodemus' question, I saw The Big Animal at a film festival going on here this week. Might go see The Fog Of War tonight, but I'm feeling a bit sleepy, so I might leave it for tomorrow after all.

Here's the rottentomatoes.com review of The Big Animal.

I've never seen it. I only know everything about movies made before 1998. Marriage and kids have completely ********ed my movie-watching habbits since then.

Actually a little less surprising now that I notice in the reviews that, despite being made in 2000, this film is only starting to make the stateside film festival circuit now.

I wish that kind of stuff would come to the film festivals here. The ones here seem obsessed with the "hipper than thou" film festival tripe that consist mainly of collections of shorts and awful feature length films. I only go for the documentaries, which they seem to have good tastes on.

Well, here's the site with the lineup for the Athens (OH) Film Festival - http://www.athensfest.org/. As you can see there's no shortage of shorts and student films as well, but most of them are playing off at the student center, while the cozy main cinema in town is the place to catch the features.

I'll catch Fog Of War and The Triplets Of Belleville (finally!) tomorrow night, along with whatever else I can make time for between now and then. Had a chance to see The Dreamers the other night, but passed it up.

Don't get me wrong, I like shorts and one of the funniest movies I've ever seen was an extremely low budget film, but I guess my big gripe is the ones here don't get many foreign movies.
