Should the Galaxy get a spot in Superliga 2008 if we win tomorrow?

Too much negativity going around the Galaxy these days:D Lets look forward to next year!

Seeing as how there is no chance the Galaxy's league position will give us a berth in next year's Superliga, should we be given the chance to defend the title in Superliga 2008 if we win tomorrow?

All the stuff about the quality of play aside, this is about whether a cup winning team deserves the chance to defend their title (ala Liverpool 2006).

    No.

The 2008 participants should be chosen on the merit of their '07 league form, in accordance with earlier announcements made by the tournament organizers.

    That is all.

This is reminiscent of Liverpool's plight after winning the Champions League in '05 yet failing to qualify out of the EPL for the '05-'06 season.

My answer is the same now as it was then. Yes, The Galaxy, and the circus that comes with them, should be able to defend their title IF they are able to win the Superliga this year. I like the idea of defending champions getting automatic bids at a chance to defend.

I think, if LA wins, they should have LA play a two-leg series against the lowest ranked MLS team that qualifies for the Superliga next year. Winner gets in.

As you mentioned the big teams in Europe all agreed that the defending UEFA CL champions should get a shot to defend their title in 2006.

I think all defending champions deserve the chance to defend their title. Whether it be an MLS Cup champion in the regular season or the Galaxy getting into the Superliga should they win tomorrow. A 2 leg playoff with the lowest qualifying MLS team would be fine, as long as they get their chance to defend within the competition.

That is a mighty big assumption there.

Having said that, I think last year's winner shouldn't get an automatic bid; having the four best from each league theoretically creates the best match-ups, which everyone wants to see.

Regardless of what any of us think or propose, As long as L.A. keeps adding stars and David Beckham is around, MLS will find ways or bend rules to make sure that the Galaxy particapates.

Aren't the Mexican teams selected by invitation for next year also?

So who cares how the MLS teams are selected for an invitational tournament.

you guys will be in that thing whether you deserve to be or not, win this years or not, qualify or not, David Beckham will be in that tournament. I'm actually worried about you guys taking our spot as we are the least appealing of the teams that would qualify profit-wise.

Tournament winners should be able to defend their titles, regardless of league play. I do, however, agree w/ how they changed the World Cup, so that the winner does not automatically qualify. That's b/c it's on a four year cycle. But CL winners should get an auto bid, Superliga, CONCACAF Champs, Copa Libertadores, etc, should all give an auto bid to the reigning champ. It just makes it easier. Don't like it? Finish third or up, and quit whining.

I would imagine that being the defending Superliga champs from 2007 would count as such. I think they'd deserve it. If they lose against Pachuca though, then of course not.

The Galaxy didn't "earn" their way in this year. Why would you expect next year to be any different?

they laid out, after they handed LA an invitation, who get invited. If they aren't one of the top two teams in the West they are out, period. That being said I am thinking SUM/AEG MLS will come up with some "wild Card" that will be handed to the Galaxy IF they win

That's a big NO from me. Look we all knew the rules coming in, and rules are rules boys and girls. I know you GALs are used to having the rules bent in your favor (trust me as a DC fan we enjoyed it too with the whole Freddy placement deal) but com'om now. If LA wins (and man what a big IF that is) then guess what? You get to take home a nice shiny feather thingy to put in your trophy cabinet. Thats it! To suggest that a team which busted it's ass all season long within the context of the rules gets to sit out next year's edition just so LA can defend it's crown is dog's bullocks.

Stop trying to backdoor your way into next year's dance and stop it with those damned excuses. "Boo-hoo, it's all MLS' fault with our schedule. It's Yallop's fault with the not sitting Becks. It's Lalas' fault for..." OK I'll give you that one. I swear you're turning into Arsen Wenger with the excuses. Dammit, stand up and take it like a man you cry babies. Look on the brightside, at least you'll still be playing in MLS next season. And don't fret, SuperLiga will very much be in the HDC next year. Feel free to thank your neighbors for that gift.

It's not one of the top two in the east or west. It's one of the TOP FOUR on a single table. If they don't make it to the 4th place position, they are out. Unless MLS decides in their infinite stupidity to expand it to 8 teams. Even then they'd still be out.

absolutely not. The rules for qualifying have already been set, it would be beyond bush league to change it mid-season.

Pachuca is going to kill the galaxy so I would not worry about the galaxy winning the game. even the world cup champion has to qualify to the world cup.

The rules are always changed for the "Super Club". How are those commercial flights going, LA Galaxy? I wouldn't be surprised to see them in the Superliga next year no matter what the outcome is this year. The next question is what will the league do to help them keep Landon next year? How about a rule change?

Agreed. I would had no problem if the rules stated -- before the season began -- that a SuperLiga champion would take one of the 4 spots. but since the rules have been set and competition has occurred, it is just wrong to change things now.
