Can anyone tell me if they prefer DISH or Direct TV over Cablevision? I'm moving to Long Island and Cablevision doesn't seem to have MSG or FSNY. That's what I need to follow my MetroStars. Do those channels come with DISH or Direct TV? Is Satellite more expensive on a monthly basis than Cablevision? Any information on either service is greatly appreciated (especially from LI fans). Thanks!
I have Cablevision and I can get MSG and FSNY, but it's a premium package that totals like $60 a month when all is said and done. If I were you I'd get the Dish as you can get Fox Sports World.
depending on how many tv's you want to hook up.... satellite, imo, is better, more channels, including fsny, msg, foxsportsworld, etc.... and its cheaper... i have dish network and have had it for a 7 or so years....if you really want to get it all...you can order fox sports world espanol....which give you even more footie.... down side is in VERY bad weather, you can lose the signal....has only happened a few times that i can remember.... also...dish network vs. direct tv.... i found that dishnetwork is a bit less expensive but this year, their mls shootout package sucks....only showing games on saturdays....directv and cable shootout show almost all the games, including sundays and weekdays.... hope it helps.... oh yes...if you do end up getting the dish..and using dishnetwork....get the PVR...its a tivo type unit satellite receiver....very awesome...
You can get MSG and FSNY with Cablevision on LI, you just have to pay extra for it -- it's not part of the basic package. It'll probably cost around $15 extra a month. You can't get FSW on Cablevision, however. For that, you need a dish.
I have FSW on cablevision in LI. You need to get the digital tier (io) which is $10 extra per month if available, plus their tuner which is $6 extra per month. Cablevision does NOT have the mls shootout package at all. As stated, msg and fsn are in a package with hbo that costs $17 extra per month.
I switched from Cablevision in Hoboken to DirecTV. Anybody who chooses Cablevision over DirecTV is an idiot. Cablevision has the highest cable rates in the country -- higher still on Long Island, apparently -- and they don't offer the Shootout. They also don't have FSW (available on DirecTV for a fee, but at least it's an option) or YES Network (which will eventually carry ManU games, apparently). A 2-room system of DirecTV should set you back about $42 a month, with free install and free equipment through Best Buy or Circuit City. MSG, FSNY, and YES are all standard on DirecTV in the New York area. Every Metro away match this season is on a DirecTV basic channel. For Cablevision you're talking at least $65 a month for the same service without YES and about 50 other channels, plus you're giving money to the Dolan family, all of whom would be better off incarcerated.
i am forced to have IO since being in landing, any form of Satelite i dont get since it is very dense in trees, hills, and wind. so i would prefer cablevison, as long as i can get the shootout package and the NFL sunday ticket, im set.

Hey, Ive got Dish Network's Basic 100 which includes MSG & FSNY. If you get their 150 channel package you will get to see the European and South American leagues as well, with channels like FSW. As far as MLS shootout Package I believe that Dish only provides the Saturday Games while Direct TV offer all MLS games throughout the week. You might want to research that to be 100%.
I would go with DirecTV if I were you. To get the package with all the "usual" channels will set you back about $30/month. And with this package, you'll get MSG, FSNY, and the YES Network. To get Fox Sports World, you need to add another $10/month for the sports package that also includes all the regional networks from all over the country. (But most of the time, those other RSNs aren't all useful because all the pro sports games are blacked. Still, you get Fox Sports World.) Voila! $40/month and you get all the stuff that you want. And if you want the Shootout, you can get it from DirecTV as well. Most of the time, DirecTV and DISH are more or less equivalent, but in the New York area, DirecTV is better because they carry YES while DISH doesn't. And even if you don't like the Yankees, YES looks like they're going to carry some OK soccer programming.

Re: Re: Re: Satellite VS Cablevision You'll get it if you're in the New York area. In other words, if you subscribe to whatever their basic package is called (Total Choice or something like that) and you get MSG and FSNY as your sports networks, you'll get YES as well.
How is the reception on DirectTV? I've heard that weather effects reception greatly. But how much? Does it need to be thundering and lightning for the reception to go out or does it just need to drizzle? How long does the reception go out for? Also, I have not been to Best Buy or Circuit City yet so I don't know what special offers they might be offering. I will try to go there this weekend. But if anyone has been there lately and they've seen any special deals, offers, or sales on DirectTv please let me know. Thanks for all the info guys!!
Generally speaking, the reception is better than cable if you get the professional install. When I had Cablevision, channels 2 through 6 were sometimes unwatchable -- never now. You need a MAJOR storm to lose satellite reception. We've lost the signal during a storm maybe twice in six months, and both times for less than 15 minutes. Circuit City -- $25 for two-room system, installed
I was going to get DirectTV, but there is a strong indication that Cablevision will be installing digital cable in my area by November. All I need to find out is if they will be offering the Shootout package.
Severe downpour can shut down reception but not often. Direct TV in a landslide as you can get Yes Channel for Yankees and a million chanles more than Cablevision. you get like 5 or 6 Fox sports stuff. I get 6 or 7 HBOs also. No brainer is Direct TV over Dish or Cable TV. NFL package also available.
I miss my Time Warner Digital Cable. My 'hood gets it in about a couple of months. Word if all shoreline neighborhoods in Brooklyn will get it too.

I know they don't now. I called a guy at Cablevision asking if they did and I'm not sure he even really knew what MLS was. Whether they will have the package in the future or not I don't know. I hope YES has some quality soccer programs this year. It's one of the reasons I'm switching to DirectTV.
