Question about Liverpool - Please answer

Well, i've been to England once and I stayed in London. Then we rented a car and drove up to Liverpool on the friday before the game and that saturday. That was a 3 hour drive, and Manchester is not far from Liverpool at all, i'm guessing a 30 minute drive from what I remember, since we took a wrong turn on the M62 and headed toward Manchester instead of London. I really didn't get to see Liverpool the city much, only went to Anfield and drove past Goodison. I was dissapointed that we didn't go to the Beatles Museum. There's a big sign advertising it as you enter the city, just a little past the 'Welcome to Liverpool' sign. Definitely go to Anfield, it's an experience of a lifetime, hope you have a great time!

 

And regarding the cost of the tickets i'm not for sure. When I went I bought them here at home before the trip online, and they were about $100 a piece. But at the stadium, or somewhere in England that you can get them, they should be about 25-30 pounds, i'm guessing. Maybe a little more expensive for certain tickets in like the lower tier of the centenary.

 

Well even though you support Spartak London and the Red Scum, I'll answer

1. The train is about four cars long (that's a joke). The trip takes about 45 minutes from Manchester Picadilly. It stops at every pissant station. It also stops right at Old Crapford. So I don't know where you'll be coming from. It was about 5 GBP. The distance is about 25 or 30 miles.

2. Game tickets are between 25 and 35 GBP. It can be very hard to get a ticket. You can try through the web two weeks before the game. Check out LFC.tv for specifics. If you go through a service it can be as much as 100 GBP. You could also try a tout outside but I wouldn't recommend it.

3. There is a recreation of the Cavern Club to visit. A good museum called the "Beatles Story" at the Albert Dock on the Mersey waterfront. It also has a local branch of the Tate Gallery. Through the Tourist Office or the Beatles Story you can take the "Magical Mystery Tour" on an exact version of the bus they used in the film visiting the sites of Penny Lane, Strawberry Field, and the boyhood homes of George, Paul, and John. It also goes close to Ringo's home but the bus can't get down the alley to his home. This is a must for any Beatles fanatic. You can also take the Anfield tour and LFC Museum tour but not on game days. This is incredible as you get to visit the changing room for LFC, touch the "This is Anfield" sign, sit in the players box, and stand next to but not on the pitch. Liverpool has a nice downtown shopping area and two magnificent cathedrals as well. Then there's always the "Ferry Cross the Mersey"

A slight digression:

I come late to this dance, being a Liverpool supporter. I know that the confession I am about to make will cast me as a complete wanker, but the first time I heard about the "This is Anfield" sign, I got chills.

I'm too old a duffer to get all plonky over touching it, but what a cool tradition.

 

It is indeed about 45 mins on the train and when you get there you will find a city that has more in common with Dublin or Paris or Amsterdam than any of its neighbouring 'english' cities.

Some of the finest architecture can be found, St Georges hall for a start, right opposite the famous Lime Street station. The Anglican Cathedral in particular will send a shiver down your spine with its Gothic authenticity. If you are lucky enough to catch it on a foggy morning its a fine sight. Its huge.
Even walking around the city centre, Dale Street for example, the buildings and monuments are show a different time in Liverpool. Tithebarn street, opposite the world famous Liver buildings (with the liver birds on top) was the first settlement in Liverpool around the time of 1066 when it was mentioned in the Doomesday book. The history is all around. Sefton Park area, going out of the City through Toxteth, still has all the old Victorian houses and parks that were built for the Merchants at the turn of the previous century. We are a World Heritage City.

Serious regeneration after thatcher raped us during the eighties has led Liverpool to be the fastest growing city in the uk. Major projects are underway that are precedors for the Capital of Culture award, the prestigious title we will hold in 2008. It is now a vibrant city.

Its the city most students study in because it has great night life. An abundance of night clubs backed up by seemingly hundreds of bars. It has about five different main areas in the City Centre alone where there are a load of bars and different 'ambiences' if thats the right word.

Go visit Anfield. See Stanley park which divides it from Woodison. The park where the new ground will stand.
Go to the Albert Dock and take in all the wonderful shops. While you're there go see the Slave Trade museum and learn just how Liverpool became so big and important in the first place. There are also lots of trendy bars and restaurants around there such as Est Est Est, Blue or baby cream. And loads more in the city centre, or 'Town' as we call it.

Take a trip up the looming Tower Restaurant, sit on everton brow which overlooks the city but make sure you do it at night when its all lit up.

Go to the tittie bars, go to the irish pubs. Go to 'Paddies Wigwam'!

Take a look around one of the 3 universities, the bustling waterfront, take a trip on the ferry to see the waterfront from the wirral. Go to Quiggins, a magical shop that sells everything from marijuana paraphinalia to antique furniture.

Go see Eleanor Rigby or the Beatles Museum. Take time out and talk to people, you'll find them alot more accomodating than people from elsewhere. Just ask Samuel L Jackson.

Pay no attention to boring old stereotypes from small minded nit-wits who are blind to the fact that this is a fantastic city. 'Well wot about the crime?' is a famous one. Yes there are idiots everywhere but crime here is alot lower than alot of other cities would have you believe. Its a FACT that Liverpool is one of the safest cities. But because we havent signed up to be perfect little englanders then the rest of the country likes to berate us about things which statistically and factually arent true.

We have our own Scouse sense of community and identity and it just annoys the hell out of the english.

'Wot bout the jobs?' is another misconception. They would have you believe we are work shy scroungers, all on the dole. Well we have a thriving local economy and many fans who come and sing 'sign on with a pen in your hand' have only their own heads up their arses as Liverpool is flourishing.

A fine city with a unique accent and many a thing to do.

You will be very welcome but just dont let on you're a chelski fan. Cosmopolitan or not, we hate chelsea.

 

Well I'm old enough to have been a teenager when the Beatles arrived and I got excited when I touched it, and walked right down the steps and out to the pitch where I sat where Shankly and Paisley, Dalglish and Souness, GH and Rafa have all sat.

On my last tour (I've done it more than once), a young man from Ireland took his girl up unto the Kop and while we watched he got on one knee and asked her to marry him. She waited a beat and nodded yes -- we'd been alerted by the guide and all clapped hands. As they came down,my mate said congratulations and the young lady revealed that the young man had made the right choice when she said thanks,this is great and I gotto stand on the Kop as well!

As great a city as we are we're not huge. The main Beatles stuff is centred around the city centre anyway and some other Beatles stuff and tourist things at the Albert Dock which is only 10 mins walk away. Arriving at 9 would leave plenty of time.

There should still be tickets left for the game and they'll set you back about £30. Anfield is 10 minutes on a bus from the city centre so you should be fine. Bit rushed here because im off to Blackburn but ill try to get some correct info about the tickets for you.

I phoned the ticket office for you and they said there are only 'restricted view' tickets left. It means the remaining tickets are in the upper Anfield Road stand in which you cant see the top half of the KOP goal. The credit card line in case you still want to go is 0870 2202151. And they'll set you back about 30 quid each. Alternatively, and im not championing touts, there is always a tout option outside the ground where you will probably pick up a KOP ticket for about 35. Its easy to spot the touts. But its upto you which way, if any, you go.

Or you could just stay in one of the pubs outside the ground like The Albert where there are literally fans from all over the world mixed with a group of local fans. Yet everyone seems to know the words to songs that were seemingly lost when they knocked down our old KOP. You would be made to feel very welcome.

YNWA and liverbird. The rest of england have their views on the Peoples Republic of Liverpool. They are scared of our solidarity, our community, our differences. We are real wheras they are guided only by right wing papers in the wonderfully up its own arse london. The media decides everything for these little englanders. Where mad theory comes from for example is riddled with estates (projects as you may know them) where the levels of violence are shocking. The sheer volume of violence is shocking. Now im not claiming Liverpool is crime free but 'our' crime seems to be magnified in order to prove that 1979-1994 england was correct after all. It was fashionable at one time to have a go against Liverpool simply because at a time when the prosperous south adored thatcherism and all it stood for, Liverpool with its socialist close-knit community, seemed a world apart. We were decimated by the tories. We became a slum while the rest stood on and laughed.

But its like a phoenix from the flames in Liverpool and all the old stereotypes are just that. Old and stale. So when mad theory comes on dont rise to the bait. Without knowing it he is merely a sheep who cannot form any of his own opinions. See, if it says it in the papers then it must be true. The irony lies within.

Personally i would have kept his opinions on the thread because they werent particularly nasty and as this seems an intelligent board then im sure people can make up their own mind.

Croc -- I'm from the States but I've got relatives on Merseyside, the Irish Diaspora, you know. I'm also quite familiar with the social history of the UK since the war. These idiots are like the idiots exploited by rightwingers here in the States -- they've no class and no status but they've been given enemies to look down on.
