    Three big matches for Ireland at the beginning of June:

    First, a friendly in New Jersey vs Mexico on June 1st. Then another vs Uruguay on June 4th in Dublin, before the massive World Cup Qualifier vs Austria in Dublin on June 11th. This will set the tone for the remainder of the campaign; three points are almost certainly necessary if we are to keep pace with Serbia and entertain any chance of actually winning the group. A draw or worse and we'll be thinking playoffs.

    O'Neill named the preliminary squad today: Seamus Coleman, Ciaran Clark, and David Meyler are all injured.

    Goalkeepers: Colin Doyle (Bradford City), Rob Elliot (Newcastle United), Keiren Westwood (Sheffield Wednesday), Darren Randolph (West Ham).

    Defenders: Cyrus Christie, Richard Keogh, Alex Pearce (Derby County), Paul McShane (Reading), Shane Duffy (Brighton & Hove Albion), John O'Shea (Sunderland), Andy Boyle (Preston North End), John Egan (Brentford), Marc Wilson (West Brom), Kevin Long, Stephen Ward (Burnley), Matt Doherty (Wolves).

    Midfielders: Aiden McGeady, James McCarthy (Everton), Glenn Whelan (Stoke City), Jeff Hendrick, Robbie Brady (Burnley), Harry Arter (Bournemouth), Conor Hourihane (Aston Villa), Stephen Gleeson (Birmingham City), Eunan O'Kane (Leeds United), Darron Gibson (Sunderland), Liam Kelly (Reading), Wes Hoolahan (Norwich City), James McClean (West Brom), Callum O'Dowda (Bristol City), Daryl Horgan (Preston North End), Jonathan Hayes (Aberdeen).

    Forwards: Kevin Doyle (Colorado Rapids), David McGoldrick (Ipswich Town), Daryl Murphy (Newcastle United), Shane Long (Southampton), Jonathan Walters (Stoke City), Adam Rooney (Aberdeen).

    It will be a small squad, mostly of Championship/fringe players, that will head State-side to play Mexico on June 1st. The remainder of the squad will join up back in Dublin for the match against Uruguay.

    Goalkeepers: Darren Randolph (West Ham United), Colin Doyle (Bradford City);

    Defenders: Cyrus Christie, Alex Pearce, Richard Keogh (all Derby County), Shane Duffy (Brighton & Hove Albion), Andy Boyle (Preston North End), Kevin Long (Burnley) Declan Rice (West Ham United), John Egan (Brentford);

    Midfielders: Eunan O'Kane (Leeds United), Alan Browne, Daryl Horgan (both Preston North End), Conor Hourihane (Aston Villa), Wes Hoolahan (Norwich City), Stephen Gleeson (Birmingham City), Callum O'Dowda (Bristol City);

    Forwards: David McGoldrick (Ipswich Town), Daryl Murphy (Newcastle United).

    Disappointing 3-1 loss to Mexico last night. We looked extremely rusty, and it's safe to say the experimental back 3 looked no more convincing than when Mick McCarthy tried it in the late-90s. Cyrus Christie and, when he got on the ball, Daryl Horgan, were the bright spots, but overall it was a pretty deflating affair. Hoping for better when the first-teamers come into the side for Uruguay on Sunday.

    Like the game in Orlando we were fortunate not to get walloped. A completely listless display and I dont think any Irish player impressed. McGoldrick looked like someone playing his first ever game. Maguire would have done better.

    The only gained from this was the fee the FAI received. Although fair play to McClean for showing up to play for his country.

    One of the quieter Ireland away games I've attended.

    Finished 1-1 in Dublin yesterday afternoon. Strange match, and a strange group. Ireland were dire for the first 45, but put Austria under more and more pressure in the second half before they finally caved. After looking so long like we would lose the match, we came quite close to winning in the last 5 minutes.

    Serbia and Wales also drew, so it's as you were in Group D. We absolutely have to beat Georgia in Tbilisi in September. If not, even if we somehow manage to finish second, there is a high chance that we will be the unfortunate 2nd placed team to miss out on the playoffs.

    Serbia in Dublin 4 days later will be absolutely massive.
