Why is it that NY/NJ always seems to get players via the weighted lottery draft. Call me stupid but why is it that they seem to get every player entering the weighted lottery. When will they see the ills of their ways :-(

Why do you think they do it in private? Does anybody actually believe they went through the charade of a lottery? Probably just asked AEG which of their teams they wanted to put this guy on.

It wasn't a weighted draft. It was a waited draft - as in all the other teams waited for the MetroStars to make up their minds about whether to pick up Akwari or not.

I'd like everyone that yells out conspiracy to name every single player we have gotten in the weighted lottery.

Done thinking? What, you can only think of two?

Its kind of ironic that we have only won a weighted lottery twice, but some how the we win it everytime. There have been a lot more than 2 weighted lotteries in the history of the MLS. I believe it was NE that won a weighted lottery right after we won the lottery for Countess.

I know Columbus won the 1st one, for Mario Longo.
I know Miami won one for Kyle Beckerman.
I know San Jose won one for Paul Grafer.
I know Dallas won one for Winston Griffiths.
I know DC didn't win one for Ben Olsen. He was just handed over.

I wasn't shooting at the Metros. I just think that that when the league does one of these things in private, it smells. Why bother to tell us its a "lottery" unless it can survive public scrutiny? Look at the lengths to which the NBA now goes to assure the public that its weighted draft lottery is in fact fair and random. Did ANYBODY other than a league insider witness this MLS process?

As a single entity, I can understand why the league would like to see a competative team in the NY metropolitan area. I could even accept the league coming out and saying that this is a rationale for giving the Metros some assistance. What I can't accept is the charade of pretending to hold a lottery, but doing it in such a fashion that it can't be verified and is not transparent. At least have a press rep there.

Did anyone ask? Has anyone ever asked to witness a lottery draft?

    Is that silence a "no"?

The press shouldn't have to ask to attend an event. They should be invited. There should be press releases. There should be anticipation generated to build interest. .... No, I guess that would be too much like actually marketing the sport.
