I think this is the first time in a long time to my knowledge following the US Open Cup that it hasn't gone into the round of penalites. If anyone else has any information to past Open Cup tournaments, please post here.

As far as I know it has gone as far into 2nd half of golden goal. Metro Vs Revs in the Quarterfinals and Guevara's Golden Goal won it of course.

I'm a little confused by your question. But checking Dave Litterer's site (and he's quite religious about marking the PK games), the last OC final that went to PKs was Dallas' win over DC in '98 (our only hardware).

But your comment about Revs and Metros in the quarterfinals sounds to me like you're talking about this tournament in particular.

I apologize if I got everyone confused. I ment to say that since all Open Cup matches in 2003 went as far as the end of Regulation or were won in Golden Goal. There were no draws and the matches never ended in the Round of Penalties.

So up to my knowledge of following the US Open Cup I don't remember a tournament where there were no matches that were decided by penalties.

Dug out my 2002 and 2003 USL Media Guides:

1995: one PK in 15 matches
    final:
Richmond Kickers [Premier League] (4) 1:1 (2) El Paso Patriots [Pro League]
This was the year before MLS started.

    1996: no PK's in 15 matches.

None of the 1995/1996 games are listed as going to OT without PK's.

    1997: 3 PK's in 31 matches (6 OT's in other matches)
    final:
    DC United (3) 0:0 (5) Dallas Burn
    third round:
    DC United (3) 0:0 (2) Hershey Wildcats [A-Lg]
    first round:
Lincoln Brigade [PDSL] (L) 1:1 (W) Philadelphia Freedom [D3 Pro]

    1998: 3 PK's in 31 matches (and 5 other OT's)
    quarterfinals
San Jose Clash (3) 1:1 (4) Chicago Fire
    third round
    Worcester Wildfire [A-Lg] (4) 2:2 (5) Tampa Bay Mutiny
    second round
    Central Jersey Riptide [D3 Pro] (2) 0:0 (3) Hampton Roads Mariners [A-Lg]

    1999: no PK's in 31 matches (6 OT's)

    2000: 3 PK's in 35 matches (three other OT's)
    quarterfinals
    MetroStars (7) 1:1 (6) Columbus Crew
    third round
Miami Fusion (6) 3:3 (5) Mid Michigan Bucks [PDL] (frowny-face)
    second round
Kansas City Wizards (6) 0:0 (7) Chicago Sockers [PDL]

    2001: 3 PK's in 35 matches (3 other OT's)
    quarterfinals
Los Angeles Galaxy (10) 1:1 (9) San Jose Earthquakes
    third round
    San Jose Earthquakes (7) 0:0 (6) Milwaukee Rampage [A-Lg]
    first round
Mexico SC of California (4) 1:1 (5) Central Coast Roadrunners [PDL]

2002: One PK game, with an asterisk, in 31 matches (and an amazing 9 other OT games)
    first round
Mexico SC of California [USASA] (6) 2:2 (5) San Diego Gauchos [D3 Pro], but Mexico SC used an illegible player, so San Diego was awarded a 2-0 forfeit win.

    Hope this info helps...
