    Norway-France Women's World Cup Opener Pre-Match!

Why not? We've got the start point of what will hopefully be a wonderful journey for the women's game as a whole, and we've got last year's MVP in the Linc. Wonder how tickets are going for our games?

Defending Olympic champs, but squandered 3 points vs. Denmark in a Euro 2005 qualifier a week and change ago (stoppage time goal given up by Nordby)? How good are they, and how do you think France will do against them? Opening games of World Cups tend to produce unexpected results (remember Cameroon-Argentina in '90; the French men themselves vs. Senegal last year in Seoul?).

    Stranger things have happened.

Anybody up for a between-game meeting in the northwest open plaza (Pattison Avenue end nearest to Broad)?

    Allons enfants de la patrie,
Le jour de gloire est arrivé!

    Contre nous, de la tyrannie

    L'étendard sanglant est levé

    (repeat)

    Entendez vous dans les campagnes

    Mugir ces féroces soldats?

Ils viennent jusque dans nos bras

    Egorger vos fils, vos compagnes.

    CHORUS

    Aux armes, citoyens!

    Formez vos bataillons!

    Marchons! Marchons!

    Qu'un sang impur

    Abreuve nos sillons!

Le jour de gloire est arrivé!

    Through the heart...

USA Today in this morning's edition suggested since France (a 'long shot') plays a 3-5-2 (with Pichon and Lattaf (?) up front), they may be vulnerable on defense when it came to counterattacking. Their achilles is probably their D; witness the tuneup against Japan in Boston Saturday.

What to wear? Charge red? Bleues blue? :)

I guess I'm no longer in the Frenchman for the Night club now. I forgot something:

    Aux armes, MES citoyens!

    Formez vos bataillons!

    Marchons! Marchons!

    Qu'un sang impur

    Abreuve nos sillons!

    Anyway,

Le jour de gloire est arrivé!

    Through the heart...

"Their achilles is probably their D; witness the tuneup against Japan in Boston Saturday."

    Pas.

    It still hurts.

    La Marseillaise
    (The Song of Marseilles)

    Original French Words

    Allons enfants de la patrie,
Le jour de gloire est arrivé!

    Contre nous, de la tyrannie

    L'étendard sanglant est levé

    (repeat)

    Entendez vous dans les campagnes

    Mugir ces féroces soldats?

Ils viennent jusque dans nos bras

    Egorger vos fils, vos compagnes.

    CHORUS

    Aux armes, citoyens!

    Formez vos bataillons!

    Marchons! Marchons!

    Qu'un sang impur

    Abreuve nos sillons!

    Amour sacré de la patrie,

    Conduis, soutiens nos bras vengeurs!

    Liberté, Liberté chérie,

    Combats avec les défenseurs!

    (repeat)

Sous nos drapeaux, que la victoire

    Accoure à tes mâles accents!

    Que tes ennemis expirants

Voient ton triomphe et notre gloire!

    CHORUS

    English Translation

Ye sons of France, awake to glory!

Hark! Hark! the people bid you rise!

Your children, wives, and grandsires hoary

Behold their tears and hear their cries!

    (repeat)

    Shall hateful tyrants, mischief breeding,

With hireling hosts a ruffian band

    Affright and desolate the land

While peace and liberty lie bleeding?

    CHORUS

To arms, to arms, ye brave!

    Th'avenging sword unsheathe!

March on, march on, all hearts resolved

    On liberty or death.

Oh liberty can man resign thee,

Once having felt thy gen'rous flame?

Can dungeons, bolts, and bar confine thee?

Or whips thy noble spirit tame?

    (repeat)

Too long the world has wept bewailing

    That falsehood's dagger tyrants wield;

But freedom is our sword and shield

And all their arts are unavailing.

    CHORUS

It's now a little over 13 hours away from Marinette's final (in all probability) home-away-from-home match in Philadelphia. I don't know if France can get out of the first round, especially if the D doesn't tighten up, but no matter the result tomorrow, she will have had a swan song here, on the biggest stage for a women's sports event this year. Lorrie nor Heather had that opportunity, unfortunately. I'd like to think they're out there in spirit with her. :)

I don't think there's been too much local TV coverage over the world cup opener being here, but hopefully everyone going tomorrow will savor this day; how often does a soccer World Cup drop by here? My makeshift French flag is already made up.

Sunday we root for the red white and blue. Tomorrow, we close ranks behind the blue, white and red.

    Vive Marinette! Allez Les Bleues!

Went to the Doubletree. Talked to a couple of players. Great women. Good French. No, wait. Patting my own back there. Anyway, I talked to Sonia Bompastor and Sandrine Capy. Good players. They are not taking the game tomorrow seriously. Well, they didn't look worried. I guess that's good. Allez les bleues! Also talked to Laura Georges. She speaks good English if you're looking for someone to talk to.

Bon but par Dagny. Et Celine Marty etais absolutement brilliante en but pour les Bleues! Prochaine fois, les Correens! Allez Les Bleues!

    Le jour de gloire arrivera!

The camp is in disarray. The players are too young. All France needs to do is frustrate them and they will start to act like a good number of them did last year at the u-19 match against Canada.
